Any of those date codes would have a "C" scratch on the rear bulkhead. There is no such thing as a "PI" 428 block. All 428's received exactly the same block whether they were installed in a cop car, or a Shelby, or Granny's '68 Colony Park Station wagon. The same exact blocks were used when the 428CJ came out. There is no special block for 428CJ or the 1969 - 70 428SCJ.

You may want to check out some other forums with an FE connection. That's what I did. Check out the parts for sale in these forums fepower.net, fordfe.com, and ford_trucks.com.

Keep looking. These parts are still out there, in all kinds of condition. I got a nice C7ME-A, 8A2, C-scratch, reinforced block for my 02/14/68 GT500. It was part of a full short block that I bought from Jack, of Jacks Ford Parts. Now I have an extra harmonic balancer with spacer, a timing chain cover with timing pointer, an unground 1U crank, and 8 C7AE-B rods. His email is jacksfordparts@gmail.com. He was a pleasure to work with and his pricing was fair. If he doesn't have what you need, he'll have connections who may have one.

While looking for the block, do a deeper dive to learn more about the different FE blocks. A little homework may save you from buying an incorrect block with the correct date code. I think you'll find this to be a great article to start with https://428cobrajet.org/id-block. I found the 428cobrajet.org web site to be both interesting and informative.

Good luck,

Steve

This guy must have seen your wanted post:

He takes great pictures but a 428 block that needs a sleeve is not worth his minimum bid.

That block has been for sale for quite a while. I saw it when I was looking for a block about 10-11 months ago.

You're right, it looks nice and it's expensive. Add in a sleeve and some tests for core shifts and cracks and it becomes an expensive crap shoot. Additionally, it's 8A29 cast date could be a killer for mtdubvee. He's looking for 8A8. A Jan 29, 1968 block cast date was a little too close to my 02/14/1968 car build date for my liking. I was told that a block cast date "sweet spot" would be 4 to 6 weeks before a car's build date. My original head are dated late Dec 1967, so I wanted a block close to them.

I would want a minimum of 4 weeks and would not be shocked to see one cast 8 - 10 weeks before the build, especially if the car was built somewhere besides Dearborn. 428 blocks were likely not cast more than once or twice a month. Engine building of 428's likely happened one or two days a month, and it only happened at Dearborn Engine Plant. Far different situation than a 390GT or a 289-2V.

This has been discussed here before. Your statement is not consistent with what was considered an accurrate build.

Two to three weeks before the car build date is considered just about perfect.

If you have evidence to the contrary perhaps you could demonstrate that through sharing pictures of those dates?

I presume your challenge to produce pictures was directed to ShelbyDoug, but I offer up a thread that I started early this year. Perhaps it'll help to save SD some effort. His information has helped me previously

http://www.saacforum.com/index.php?topic=7398.0

I based my search and eventual acquisition on the information offered and the date codes on my heads and exhaust manifolds seen in the same thread; 7M16 to 8A22.

It's a shame that SAAC Forum 1 crashed because I think we lost some great information and photos that could have been used for this discussion. Perhaps mtdubvee can use all this information to his own comfort level and make a decision.

I have to agree with this...

From my very, very limited knowledge of original engine blocks dated to their original vehicles I see more like 4-8 weeks...

Just my .02
