Autolite 4100 HIPO carburetor
« on: October 10, 2020, 01:39:02 AM »
I was restoring a C30F AJ Autolite 4100 carburetor for a project in the shop and I wanted to get opinions on the plating colors we used to restore the carburetor with. It would be nice to have this kind of info on the “Concours” page but I couldn’t find any. Anyway feel free to blast away if you see a discrepancy.

Dan Case can give the best feedback here.  One of the biggest issues with this particular carb is it looks like the body and top plate have been bead blasted and the smooth finish has been lost.

Also, it looks like the top plate gasket is on backwards, that tab shouldn't be sticking out the front.

The carburetor body has not been media blasted in any way. I corrected the gasket, the secondaries would have had a hard time getting a vacuum signal, thank you Charles.

John,
I have a spreadsheet on materials, finishes, paint daubs, and grease pencil inspection marks for C3OF-AB, C3OF-AJ 1963 and 1964 (one engineering number but some small changes were made for 1964), and C4OF-AL carburetors used as O.E. on HP289 powered Cobras. It has taken decades to collect all this trivia. Buying new old stock production and new car take off carburetors as samples helped a lot. Details of a few less than 10,000 miles from new Cobras added to the database or confirmed what I already had. If I was doing a HP260 carburetor I would detail it like a C3OF-AB unit as they are very similar in all ways. C4OF-AT assemblies used with automatic transmission Cobras were built in April 1964 along side C4OF-AL assemblies so I would use the suffix AL information for the suffix AT assemblies. (I did when I cleaned up and serviced a unit for CSX2580 earlier this year. The air cleaner stud is a nos one but all the other parts were just carefully cleaned except the secondary throttle shaft, which needed some repair work.)

I also have many close up color pictures I took long long ago of a new old stock C3OF-AJ carburetor dated 3EE.

Want a spreadsheet copy emailed?

Hi Dan,

Emailed would be great, thank you. The carb in question is for a later 1964 production 289 Cobra, C30F AJ.

Okay, I will have to do that from my desk at home later today.

Thank you, Dan.

You are welcome. I just sent the file. If you want a set of pictures of a new old stock 1963 production C3OF-AJ, send me a new flash drive. The set takes up way too much file space (almost 95MB) to email.

Thanks again, Dan!
I do have a couple of insights that you might be interested in as far as the choke housing casting. I’ll email you regarding this.
