Does anyone know the significance on the casting 302 14 in the valley area? I know 302 obviously but 14? thanks

Royce Peterson

The mold for the block was made up from various pieces. The lifter valley section is one piece of the mold. Presumably there would be many other lifter valley castings with quality control numbers from 1 - maybe 15? The control number was used so that if workers on the casting or machining line spotted defects it would be easier to find the affected tool. This is common practice in any large foundry operation.
