Hi all,

In the forum 1.0, I had put together a series of images to show the differences between the two versions of the 1966 aluminum 10 spokes.  There might be other very subtitle differences with each version, but primarily two versions.  The attached image shows the set of wheels for sale with high lights on the differences.  It was probably pretty common when these wheels became available, that the early sets had a mixed batch of wheel versions.  Depending how wheel sets were put together, it is also possible a late car could have gotten a mixed set.  It is more common to see the later version as a complete matched set.

Summary of primary key feature differences:

Version 1 - early or first casting.  This version is slightly wider that the second version.  The spokes do not run all the way to the edge of the rim, but fall short by about half inch.  The molding spruces are paired and close together.  This wheel also took more materiel to produce.

Version 2 - later or second casting (Most common version.)  This version, the spokes run to the edge of the rim and the casting spruces are farther apart when compared to the version 1 wheel.  I am betting this change was made to improve the producibility of the wheels and reduce the rejection rate and thus reduce cost.  Version 2 also used less materiel, reducing material cost.  I actually talked to Phil Remington about this and he had no memory of the tooling change or that there was a difference.  I expect the supplier made the change without notifying SAI.  They made the change to improve their bottom line.

This set is pretty nice, but spendy.  It is a mixed set with 2 early and 3 late.  As of this post, the seller has not disclosed the mixed set.  All the closeup single wheel images are of the earlier wheel. The potential buyer needs to be aware of this.  It is not bad, but something to be aware.

Take care

Cory

It is commendable that you took the time to point out the differences .

Great right up Cory.

6S2020 has a mixed set of 5, original to the car .

I have observed a couple of 66s with a mixed set.
