Engine bay decals, save or replace with new?
« on: November 20, 2020, 08:21:40 AM »
My KR body is off to the blasters on Tuesday, I would like to save the original decals as they are in pretty decent shape. Body guy says tricky to make the paint look good around the decals as they are feathered/raised at the edge in some places.
Am I being pedantic, should I just accept nice shiny new repro decals?....or push to keep the originals?
I guess maybe there is no correct way, but is there a school of thought?

Your body guy is correct, it will look terrible and out of place if you try to keep them and paint around them.  IMO, since the paint around them isn't going to be original and the car is being blasted, there is no reason to keep the stickers.  Just take pictures and place the new ones where the old ones were.

If you were looking at preservation then yes, you would try and save them but you also wouldn't be blasting it :) and would be going a different route.

I don't know what “pedantic” is,  ;D but replace them. Your body guy is correct, they will look bad. You can realign them, they look bad now

They might come off with a heat gun and scraper, but most likely would be ruined in the process.  Might want to try it and then save what's left in your documentation binder.

Many years ago I carefully removed the originals from my KR, stuck them to a sheet of paper and saved them. I put new reproductions back on the car.

Maybe try to prematurely age the new ones by leaving them outside in the elements for the next year while you do your restoration

My body guy thinks he will be able to get them off by applying heat from the inside of the shock tower....he was happy to hear they are coming off  ;D
