Anyone Know this Car 2
« on: November 30, 2020, 10:36:22 PM »
This is a little odd because I have been following the Boss 9 cars for sale for a while.  I am only looking for a red car so my selection is a little specific but this one showed up at LMC.  It looks like a really solid car and has some trophy's to give it the right provenance.  The price is serious but that is not my first concern as paying too much for a great car is not as stupid as paying too much for a pile of junk.  So, anyone know anything about this car.  Here is the link. https://www.legendarymotorcar.com/inventory/1969-ford-mustang-boss-429-2261.aspx

LMC does not post the price and I don't know if it would be unfair to them to post it here so I don't want to put their price on the forum.  I guess there is some reason that they don't want to put it in the ad but I will say that their price was market correct in comparison to the car at Earth Motors in Dallas.  This car was restored in the 2008 - 10 time frame and judged in a 2011 MCA event -- I don't know who restored it and the pictures look like it was done in a small shop.  As far as I can tell that is the last time it was judged so there have been 9 years since its debut.  LMC says that the car has held up very well.

I did get the judging sheets on the car and confirmed it received (gold) at SAAC 34 and also got gold at an MCA National event.  I don't know the intimate details of what makes a Boss 9 right or wrong but the judging sheets certainly helped show this car is not a bad version.  I do know that it does not have its original engine and, according to what I read after some internet research on the owner, it was rough before the restoration.  With that said the owner appears to be a knowledgeable Mustang/Boss guy.

This one surprised me but may not have surprised the rest of you.  I learned that I can't see the car because it is in Canada and US citizens have to quarantine for 14 days to see a car.  Covid has reared its ugly head again.  Even though I think LMC are straight shooters I cannot imagine personally spending this sort of money without seeing the car so I am trying to locate someone in Canada that knows these cars well enough to be my eyes.  If anyone knows anyone in Canada that has some Mustang knowledge (preferably Boss 9) let me know.

Eric, it would make sense to me to ask LMC to set up a virtual meeting with you, Ed aka"special Ed", (I am sure Peter knows him) and the LMC sales person.  Ed could ask specific questions and view the car online in real time video.

Ed could tell them exactly what he wanted to see and they could even put it up on a lift.  Like you, I agree LMC is a forthwith company and would have no desire to "get one over on anyone" because their reputation is at stake.

This way you and Ed could have a call after the virtual showing and then you could make an informed offer if you are so inclined.  JMO

I don't know what Ed would charge for his services but that is about the best you can get for an expert opinion that I know of.

I wish you the best with the hunt!

Ed,

The KK # is 1658 according to the Marti Report but I have not seen a picture of the door itself.  There is a judging sheet from SAAC 34 that has some handwriting that says something to the effect that you inspected the car in 2014 - it was judged in 2009.  I don't know if that is true or not but that is simply what the paper says.  I don't know where it was restored but it is owned by a man named Hernquist out of PA owned it then and still owns it now if that helps jog your memory.  Legendary Motor Cars has this car on a consignment by the Seller.  I understand from LMC that the engine is not the original engine in the car but, according to the Marti report, it otherwise looks correct.  I don't feel comfortable posting the documents that were sent to me by LMC with the judging sheets but I would be happy to send them to you either via email or a PM.  They sent me photos of some restoration pictures but they are pictures of pictures so not a lot of help.  Let me know if this car is familiar to you.

Getting closer on this particular car but still not quite there.  Special Ed has given me the details on the car, and we have been over all of those, and the Seller has negotiated to a price that is pretty close to something I would pay -- we are still $20,000 apart but I have a pretty good idea where this ends.  I appreciate everyone that has given me their input and I have taken it all to heart.

When the car was judged at MCA they criticized the door fit and so I asked the Seller to give me some photos of all of the things pointed out in the judging.  If I had restored the car I would have dealt with this stuff before paint but they did not.  The fit at the front fender looks good so I am guessing the hinge alignment is reasonable but there may be some room to add a shim.  My 1969 Shelby fits better than this but the gaps are certainly not perfect in any of these cars.

Anyone have thoughts on the cure?  I have heard that you can twist a Mustang door but that sounds like a recipe for paint problems.  The Seller has a restoration shop so I suspect that I could make them improve the situation but I don't know that for sure.  One thing that is clear is that there are lots of 1969 Red Boss 429's out there if this one goes away.

Anyway, here are some pics and I would like to hear advice on the fix.

Eric, I agree such a simple thing to fix before paint.  I would ask them to fix the issues so if any paint gets damaged it will be fixed before you receive it.  Looks like a great car.

The deal is done and I have paid in full.  Legendary Motor Cars was a real pleasure to deal with and I think I got a pretty fair price.  I don't want to put the price out in public but this car went across the auction block before and I hit that number basically on the head.  The car does not have a numbers matching engine but the rest of the car looks very good.  I want to thank everyone for introducing me to Special Ed.  He was a great help and certainly one of the most knowledgeable people you could meet in the Boss 9 world.  Special Ed has given me the list of items to correct and now I look forward to tinkering with some of the minor details to get this car to the next level.  Who knows where the market goes on these cars but I think I got a pretty good one.

Hi Eric

I had seen that B9 on the Legendary site before.

Great looking car.

It sure will sit in the garage well with all those other lovely red machines you have

Well done 🍸
