Any woodworkers out there, I am in need of an opinion
« on: December 08, 2020, 11:25:51 AM »
My Steinway was a "Stainway" when I got it. Fix or leave? I spin a story that the stain on the stretch board and a bit of the fall board was caused by a bourbon drink placed there as the performer was banging out Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. The reality is, I believe, caused by a hot coffee placed there to play chopsticks.

There's allot of variables with your question.
- If it was just a cheep piano I would just leave it, it's not worth the expense.  Since it's a Steinway it has value, monetary and perhaps sentimental.
- It looks pretty bad so I don't think I could go with the "leave it alone, it's got character" line of thinking unless you don't really care.  Since you posted this thread, I figure it's been bugging you.
- A wide shot with a bigger picture of the affected area would help.  From you video it sort of looks like it might be a section that could isolated and taped off and sanded down (at the corners) and new coatings could be applied....... possibly.  A wide shot would help determine this.

I've been in custom home construction for 25 years and we install a ton of hardwood into my houses.  On a rare occasion a brand new hardwood floor gets some damage and we need to fix it for our customers.  It can be tricky to fix a small section of brand new site finished hardwood but it can be done.  Just like repainting a quarter panel on a car.  A good painter can match the color and finish pretty close but never perfect.  An amazing painter can work miracles.

Show us a wide angle and I'll give you my 2 cents..... for what it's worth.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

The finish is probably varnish. All you need to do is use thinner or sometimes alcohol to get it liquid then brush it even again. We fixed a spot on my mom's piano that way that had been in the sun. https://homesteady.com/how-8153457-repair-furniture-crocodile-finish.html
The cleaning step is important so any dirt doesn't ruin the repaired finish.

I think it is varnish. I will confirm with the Steinway factory. Thank you.

This is good advice.  I'd check an inconspicuous place and test to see if it likes mineral spirits, turpentine, acetone, etc.

Good luck!

All good advice, looks like a circular item was put on it ...maybe a hot cup of coffee, pot etc. Maybe something caustic thats round that might have landed on it. Start there. :'(

Caution Stain sticker. I'm liking that option.
