65 GT350 Hipo water pump bolts
« on: January 15, 2021, 03:40:27 PM »
Am interested to see pictures of the bolts that connect the alum water pump to timing cover for a 65 GT350 engine. Specifically the bolts closest to the distributor at top of pump. Were they the same or was one of them a longer castle bolt with a washer?

Details, geez...

Yes, longer castle head bolt and washer . It was in case a PS bracket was used even though the hipo didn't come with PS . Regular non K engine could have.  Ford had their reasons . All kinds of possible speculations. It is just the way Ford did it . I have seen some without the washer on cars that didn't appear to be messed with too. SORRY picture is of a later 65 with a cast iron pump .

That's not the typical 65 289 aluminum water pump bolts, maybe for cast iron.  Most of them should be dished with slightly flared base, no markings.  The bolts that hold the alternator bracket on were the notched/cut head style.

Really interested in the three on the upper half of the pump. Believe pass side is a castle headed bolt and other 2 (one at top and other at drives corner) are shorter "normal" bolts.

These pics should help.  This should be correct for most aluminum pump 65's... it's a Ford 289 detail, nothing special with these for Shelby's, other than being a hi-po pump.

Have about six early (aluminum water pump) cars with the dished/sunken head design - flared base bolts also for those upper holes. Plus a couple of period pictures that appear to be the same
