Cobra 427 vs 428 Performance differences?
« on: February 14, 2021, 07:07:08 PM »
I can't recall ever seeing a magazine test of a 428 Cobra.  Does anyone have one they can post?

What would be the guess as to the acceleration difference between the two (stock, back in the day)?  Given both cars having the same rear-end ratio.

One might argue that the 428 has more low-end torque, so it might be quicker 0-60 mph.

By the end of the 1/4 mile, I'd guess that the 427 would be a couple of lengths ahead.
Current:
2006 FGT. Tungsten. Whipple, HRE 20s, Ohlin coil-overs, 3.90 gears. 210.7 mph.

Kirkham Cobra. 482-inch aluminum side-oiler. Tremec 5-spd.

Formerly:
1968 GT500KR #2575 (1982-2022)
1970 Ranchero GT 429
1969 LTD Country Squire 429
1963 T-Bird Sport Roadster
1957 T-Bird E-model 3-spd stick

The 427 would leave the 428 in the dust like it was tied to a tree stump... No comparison. Almost like comparing a 4v 302 to a BOSS 302, not in the same league. Similar but very different. :-[

Yes, the 427 is significantly dominant over the period Ford offered 428, in the truest sense of the OP's question. One was a race engine and the other a T-bird or station wagon engine.

Having said that, the potential now is very similar. The 427 having better higher rpm potential built into it initially.

Many current part updates to critical components such as valve springs, camshaft profiles and bottom end components currently really make it neck and neck now and if we are talking about drag racing it may just depend on the drivers in competition as to the winner?
