Windage Tray Question for FE Engine

I currently have a Shelby style aluminum oil pan on a FE block.  Included with this installation is a separate windage tray that runs the full length of the engine and is installed with its own gasket prior to the installation of the oil pan.

I want to remove the aluminum oil pan and replace it with a Scott Drake steel reproduction oil pan.  The Scott Drake oil pan has a small windage tray welded inside the pan.

Do I keep the extra full length windage tray or eliminate the full length windage tray when I make this change in oil pans?.

68 GT500 or GT500 KR did not use the windage tray from the factory. With that said 69/70 used a windage tray with the stock oil pan . So if you want to use it on your 68 with a stock oilpan you can. Just do so knowing it is not like assemblyline . You can tell by the stacked oilpan gasket profile if a engine has one or not. If that doesn't matter to you then go for it.

My engine is a 1964 vintage 427.

It really doesn't matter which FE you have. The SCJ widage tray is an add on. Just install it.
You want to decide which dipstick that you have and determine how many quarts of oil you have in the pan.

The dipstick was recalibrated at the time the windage tray was added to the FE lineup in order to add more oil to the oil pan around that time. I'd suggest that you use the recalibrated dipstick and run the extra oil.

I'm not an expert on the dipsticks by any stretch of the immagination although there are some here so if you need help on that, start another thread and ask.

Special Ed has chimed in since he seems to have a complete variety of originals to compare to so he's a good source of information, amongst others. ;)

The c9zz windage tray was a 69 -70 428 cj  and scj part and the dipstick was different than 67-68 428 dipstick . The easy way to tell is 67-68 had FOMOCO stamp  and 69-70 has ford stamp with more writing and different oil level marks because of another oil pan gasket and windage tray added in 69-70 making the oil pan installed lower on the block. There were 3 minor running changes on the c9zz windage tray in 69 and its the cutout area up by the dipstick opening got bigger for more clearance. The new c9zz oil pan came out in 69 and it had a smaller lower baffle spotwelded down lower in bottom of oil pan than the 67-68 c6oz oil pan. The new c9zz oil pan was designed (i think) to be used with the new c9zz windage tray BUT (from my research anyway) for some reason the new c9zz oil pan dont start showing up till late 69 and 70 428 cj scj production. So either ford was using up the c6oz oilpans or the new c9zz oil pan was late making into production not sure anybody else know why?

Does the Ford dipstick tube change or just the dipsticks?

Which dipstick goes with which oil pan and which one with the windage tray?

No difference in dipstick tubes. Read what Ed posted it is 100% accurate.

It should not be a problem and the same info holds true. Posting in the 68 Shelby category leads readers to assume the discussion is about that year car/parts unless information provided suggests otherwise.

I have some extra assembly line FOMCO 67-68 gt500 & kr & 68 1/2 cj dipsticks to sell if needed $125.00 and up depending on condition.  These 67-68 dipstick have not been repoed as the repos are the later type service dipsticks with wrong oil fill  markings for 67-68 that dont use windage trays.

My dip  stick has a chrome handle and has the numbers C70E-6750-A M stamped on the stick.  Pictures are attached.

I was thinking of using a straight edge across the bottom of the block with the dip stick in place and marking the dip stick for the full condition.

That is the service part OR the current Scott Drake reproduction part.

What model car do you have? The original 67 GT500 part is painted black. I think it's C7AE.

Here are two more  pictures.

The distance from the tip of the dip stick to the bottom of "Add" is about 1 inch.

The distance from the tip of the dip stick to the top of "Add" and bottom of "Safe" is about 2 inches.

The distance from the tip of the dip stick to the bottom of "Safe" is about 2.75 inches.

The distance from the tip of the dip stick to the top of the tube is about 20 inches.

The part number for the Scott Drake oil pan is C60Z-6675-A.

RSOHC,
I would keep the factory windage tray with the Scott Drake pan. Keeping the oil in the "sump" separated from the spinning crank is a good thing. Some higher end pans have trap doors and their own trays but not in your case.
