Could someone please enlighten me on what's correct for the shocks and also the "dreaded Mustang caution fan sticker?" Sounds like I have some simple fixes to make...

Despite best intentions we never did get a picture of the three early cars together, but #0078, #0083, and #0085 were in attendance.

The professional photographer got some terrific shots of #0083 on the track, and see the first link for a good video of the drag race. I drove the hell out of that car!

That's correct. #0078 was originally a rare Bronze Metallic car, just like #0085!

Shocks would have been (for your car's production period at San Jose - where they were installed) FoMoCo marked  adjustable Gabriel shocks front and rear painted semi-gloss black. Fronts have a distinctive "washer" with a series of holes and a notch that is welded just below the top attachment point that is visible in the engine compartment.

The CAUTION FAN sticker was a safety campaign in the early 70's where Ford was concerned about the hazard a spinning fan could be - for one reason or another. To address they they sent out 100's of thousands of these stickers to ever registered Ford owner they had or could get records of, inserted one in each of the service replacement radiator shroud being made and tons of them to the dealerships with instructions to place one on every car in inventory and those coming in for servicing. The original design and application before this time was limited to a handful of specific Ford models where they only has a partial shroud

Because every original owner of a Ford at the time got one many of them installed them on their car only to be found decade or more later on an other wise unrestored car lead many people who saw or bought those cars to assume that the sticker was original since so many had them in place, In the 80-90's at shows they were expected until we learned the whole history

Are you talking about the washers welded to the shock mount itself? If I remember they were part of the Ford export package - brace, stiffener on cowl and shock mounts.

  No it is on the shock shaft just below the mounting eyelet. Sort of like a thin disc with some holes in it. Unique to Gabriel brand shocks , but not "all" of them , mainly adjustables , even later drag shocks.
