1967 steel wheel identification
« on: January 15, 2022, 09:23:11 AM »
Do we have a topic to identify '67 steel rims/wheels--much like the superb '68 topic?? http://www.saacforum.com/index.php?topic=1473.msg12421#msg12421

If so, I'm missing it.  If not, could some '67 folks put together that information?

Thank you.
Don

Somewhere I have photos of 67 Shelby steel wheels, just haven't been able to find the file yet. The 67 and 68 steel wheels are very similar. They are both 15 x 6 Kelsey wheels. Noticeable differences are the 67 wheel has 3 nubs in the center to hold a hub cap vs the 68 has 4. The offset/back spacing is about 1/4" different. Obviously the date codes. I will keep looking for the photos as they must be on a SD card and not my PC.

Thought there was a thread on this subject on the Crashed Website.

I think this is a '67 I had in my files...if not let me know I'll delete it.

There is not enough of the wheel in the photo to tell if it is a 67 Shelby wheel but it is definitely a 67 wheel.

better, worse or the same ;-)

I thought (?) the wheels for Shelby's were black.

sorry I don't have any rear views of the wheel.

Yes, 67 as well as 68 Shelby steel wheels were painted S/G black.

Here is a picture of an original 1967 steel wheel and tire for #2339.  I can post a better picture if wanted.

Yes, get a brighter photo if you can.  I'm thinking the air ventilation slots are a different shape on the '67s.  A better photo would show that feature.  Also, can you get shots of the entire lug area, as well as the valve stem area?

Thanks!

Thank you 1242 and JD!  That clearly shows the 3 nubs, as well as the different shape of the air slots.

Now, what stampings are typically found in the lug area and the valve stem area?  Are the rims (with tire off), stamped also?
JD's shows month and year in lug area.  Is the oval Fomoco script also found?

Here are some clearer pictures.  Hopefully, you will see the stampings.  I believe the are stamped on the inside with Kelsey Hayes and the size.  I have a set in my loft without tires.  I will try and check soon,

The valve stem area is stamped in 68 and later. Nothing in this area for 67.
The 68s on up have 4 nubs, D shaped air vents and codes in the valve stem area.
68s are relatively common compared to 67s.

There are many T-bird wheels that look similar (but not exact).
If you run the full wheel covers you can use the 15x6 T-bird wheels and most people won't know the difference. The judges and people who have searched for these will.
