Tranny swap
« on: April 16, 2022, 10:22:05 PM »
And no I'm not confused about which bathroom to use lol ,but seriously looking for opinions on  an automatic to 4 speed swap .Who's done it ? any advantages or disadvantages and how involved of a project is it , like how hard is to get the correct parts for the swap (& what exactly should I be searching for) . My engine is already out  & being rebuilt ,so this is the time to do it if I was going to. Being an automatic you already take a hit in value ,what I'm wondering is does a 4 speed swap give you an even bigger hit in value or would it keep it even ,with the value of an automatic possibly ,or is it as drastic as a color change.
At the end of the day the cars for me & I love it either way ,it took me years to find an inboard, Nightmist blue/parchment color combo & I ended up settling for an auto ,because a 4 speed in that color, never came up for sale ,in my probable five year search.I do plan on keeping it & enjoying it for a long time.

Hello, you need a bellhousing, inspection plate, block plate, clutch, clutch fork, throwout bearing, clutch equalizer and mounting stuff for it, flywheel with bolts, starter, pedal assembly, shifter assembly, shifter plate, linkage, insulator, 4 speed tranny, tranny mount is also different, if you use an 31 spline toploader you can use the yoke from the C6 if you have an gt500. Driveshaft is different on a GT500. For the value I would say its the same as long you use Fomoco stuff.

I converted my 67 500. No issues. Everything bolts right up. Bellhousing with the Hump is needed. Clutch pedal assembly of course. Different speedo cable. Transmission mount with 390 stamp. And drive shaft to fit. Easy.

And it would be wise to rebuild the pedal support you get. Use the roller bearings, they keep it nice and smooth .

When you say “getting the correct parts”,  well the correct transmission with correct big block shifter and clutch fork for your 67 GT500 isn’t easy and all the other parts needed will add up to a pretty substantial cost.  Can you install all of this yourself?  Because if you can’t, it’s pretty labor intensive on an already completed car, especially the clutch support/pedals.  Of course you can get parts that will work for less that aren’t “correct” but.??.  Not trying to deter you, just saying it would be expensive if trying to go “correct”.  It’s your car...have fun!

If youre still considering this swap,
I have a few big in/out toploaders , restored clutch pedal assembly , flywheel, possibly a BB shifter assy with kick back plate, and  some of the clutch linkage as well.
send me a PM if interested
