The G40A has a check valve in it that lets air in the tank as fuel is depleted. It does not let fuel or fuel fumes out.

FWIW,
My old 1970 GT-500 had a non-vented cap. Yes, it was a California car.

Right, the California and Arizona cars had an evaporative emissions charcoal cannister that is the vent for the tank, so a different gas cap is used for those cars. It doesn't need a vent if the system is installed and working properly.

Those different non vented caps used on the evaporative emission equipped cars fit a special necked down filler tube which makes it necessary for the the cap to be much smaller then the typical stock cap.

Ed,

Arizona adopted the California emissions rules in about 1964 so anything California did they made the same. Arizona adopted Thermactor at the same time as California, etc. Probably because Phoenix and LA both had serious air pollution from car exhausts and fumes.

Also, wasn't there a re-call concerning the gas caps causing fires from the fumes and the center exhausts?

Yes and for cars that returned for that they got a non-vented cap and a vent added to the factory filler neck as shown in past threads on the subject

A slight addition in that besides the added tube vent the dealer ether replaced the stock cap with a non vented cap or made a revision to the stock cap that rendered it non venting as per factory recall instructions.
