It was actually put into production...BUT only from the drivers side.
Take a closer look and you'll see that it the typical two door hardtop on the driver's side.

The RX-8 is a four door disguised in a sports car. Lower insurance according to an owner I talked with recently.

The Saturn coupe (SC?) might be the first mass produced 3-dr car.

In 1998, Saturn had an ad for its three-door coupe. In it, there's a kid playing a tuba in a field. He finishes his solo and - wait for it - mom opens the doors and the tuba fits in the back seat!!

No doubt alot of tuba owners bought the car for that reason.
