Symmons Plains 1967, Mr.Sideways, the late Ray Alford, always the entertainer Ray drove the Cusso like he stole it, the spectators certainly got their monies worth every time he rolled up to the grid.

Ford felt the destroked 427 would be an advantage because NASCAR gave a weight break for smaller cube engines. They sounded like a chain saw spooled up, the mighty 427 revved up like a chainsaw ... Oh Hell yes. ;D

Racing strategy aside, it's strange to me that Ford would want to advertise the (what would look like to most people) big block Chevy engine displacement on the car.  An engine Ford never put in any production car.  Where were the marketing guys?

Or, was that a requirement in NASCAR back then?

Are you saying Ford never put 427 engines in production cars?

Ha...no I meant the 396.

Just now had the thought that perhaps that race was before the debut of the 1965 Corvette 396 and the '65 Malibu SS396 (RPO Z16) so Ford wouldn't have cared.

   Mike ,
It was a simple change to a 3.500 stroke crank along with a minute increase in cylinder diameter ( .010) to get the 396 cubic inches. Since these were not "production" engines , the specifications and component parts were not "public" knowledge. The parts were made using "SK" numbers .

427heaven & gt350hr, thanks for the education on that 396 in the Lorenzen car.

Question,  there was a weight advantage running the 396, did he run the fairlane all year ? what kind of power would it make vs the 427, Ford obviously thought there was something to be gained going this route. did it pay off ? I'd have to look at the stats for that year, was it '66 or '67 ?

Mike

quick look up on the net, in '67 Lorenzen ran the 427 at Daytona, won the qualifier, finished 2nd in the 500. did they use the 396 on the short tracks ? I'll dig out my Holmann-Moody book, maybe there's something in there ?

I've always loved that '60s NASCAR look with the cubic inches on the hood - plus those painted steel wheels.
