I guess it's a case of throwing stuff up on the wall to see what sticks.

Sometimes you can spot little design elements here and there that made production.

That glass wagon-van is cool.

sorta reminds me of the Deora?

That's it, knew it looked "familiar".

Ooops!
See below, OK wrong "car", but there was a Hot Wheels that did look very similar to the glass van posted above.

The Deora was designed by Harry Bradley and built be the Alexander Brothers.

As I've mentioned on other threads, Mike Alexander worked at the Kar Kraft Design Center.

This photo of the Deora is from the Pat Ganahl Collection and is scanned from my copy of the book; "America's Wildest Show Rods of the 1960s & 1970s".

This pic is from my copy of the Summer 2011 issue of Street Rodder Premium magazine.

According to the photo caption, and as phred said, the rear hatch, windshield and roof are 1960 Ford station wagon.

It does look like in this photo that the windshield, A pillars and roof are one piece.

That's Larry Alexander in the pic BTW.

Cool stuff!

I'm scanning some old photos for a friend, this one might be of some interest to this group, see attached.

1966 Ford parade car supplied by Hull-Dobbs.  Date on print is August 1966, probably 4th of July Parade.

The Deora looks a lot smaller/lower in this pix with the guy beside it, than in the alone color pix.

I never saw it in person., but I still have my Hot Wheels Deora, circa 1968, with the surfboards.

That picture looks like it could easily be at Snoqualmie Pass here in Washington

Why do vaguely remember my Deora Hotwheel having a blown Hemi sticking out of the bed floor?

As beautiful as it is, my guess is if it able to run on it's own, my guess it would have to be a small 4 cylinder like the Ford V4 Saab put in a lot of their small cars.

According to my various books, magazines and vintage show car programs, Harry Bradley designed the Deora for Chrysler while working at General Motors.

It is a modified 1965 Dodge A100 pickup that (probably due to corporate orders) retained it's slant six engine that was modified with twin carbs, etc. I've always understood that it runs and drives. I think that was a part of it's purpose.

It won the Ridler Award when it debuted at the 1967 Detroit Autorama and was included in the original first-ever batch of sixteen Mattel Hot Wheels cars.

None of the Deora Hot Wheels cars that I ever had (or still have) had the engine poking out of the car anywhere.

Interestingly, Bradley was hired by Mattel to develop the Hot Wheels line. When Mattel owner and Hot Wheels creator Elliot Handler wanted to include the Deora in the initial Hot Wheels offerings he wanted to add the surf boards to create some visual interest. Bradley strongly objected and was almost fired over the matter. In retrospect, Bradley thinks the surf boards were the right decision and considers the incident a good lesson on getting out of your own little groove and thinking cross-culturally - in this case the hot rodding culture and the surfer culture.
