Russ Davis started selling tractors in Covina, CA in the 1920's. By the 60s it was a successful Ford dealership covering an entire square block. In 1964 he lured a drag racing salesman away from his lightweight Galaxie ride for Downtown Motors in LA. He gave Gas Rhonda a new Thunderbolt to campaign in 65 Ford sold him a SOHC Mustang for $1. That car got totaled when an axle broke. Ford seeing it wasn't his fault sold him another $1 car. The next year saw the birth of the Funny Car and Gas ran those until his career ending crash/fire in 1970. After that he opened a bar in Azusa and then one - Rhonda's Gas House - in West Covina. That land got taken over by Roger Penske for his Mercedes dealership service shop and Gas retired to Palm Springs where he passed away last year. Gas still owned a Mustang and it was maintained and tuned by his friend Les Ritchie's son. Les built Shelbys drag cars.
Dealership will become retail and residential area.
