I've had my Autolite maintenance free for 8 years with zero problems. I contacted the manufacturer right after I purchased it and the tech support said to set my Sears Diehard charger on 10 amps and AGM. Charge for 1 hour and do this every 3 months.

I've done what was instructed with Zero problems:D

And why does it look like part of the inner-battery's case melted from the bare cables?  That can't be good.

It's most likely an AGM battery.  Size is not really that important here, as long as it has enough cca to start the motor.  Optima batteries are AGM technology.

Wouldn't it be cool to have the 65-67 assembly line type battery with a battery that can be replaced inside?

What does the inner battery have printed on it?

There is a difference in meeting the bare minimum CCA's and having reserve on hand in a special occasion. A bigger battle, AGM or not will always have more available and on reserve.
