There is a Black one on that site too.....

"This beautifully restored slab side Cobra is 100% correct, right down to the windshield squirter nozzles. During inspection, the only non-correct component we noted was the VIN tag, which was installed so that the car could be registered in Texas. It is a correct VIN tag, but for a later model slab side Cobra (built after CSX2125.)"

If it has the WRONG VIN#, how was it abled to get Registered?

CSX2125 should not have a foot box tag, only a frame stamped number.

Missing is the Hugus installed roll bar assembly. I hope that it was not put into the dumpster! I have a bit of knowledge on this particular Cobra as I had worked on it previously. It also looks like there is some room for improvement in “originality” by replacing reproduction parts.

Texas and I have bumped heads when I relocated here. I went at it with DPS here when they verified my 1967 Shelby serial/VIN number. The DPS officer tried to tell me it was a felony to remove the Ford door tag.  I asked him if he was familiar with Shelbys. I let him know that they were removed by Shelby with the exception of just a few. He said that ALL Fords of the era had a door VIN tag.  We had a heated discussion and I wound up going over his head on the spot after he tried to use his authority to impound the vehicle and threatened arrest me for altering the VIN.  I would assume 15 years later the have become familiar.

Pre CSX2125 Cobras did not have a foot box tag, only a frame stamped number.

CSX2xxx chassis wise the familiar photo etched black and aluminum chassis tags became standard at CSX2201. I have no idea when the COB/COX60xx  chassis started getting them. Lots of chassis before CSX2201 have over the decades obtained all kinds of owner added tags, including original factory tags that a parts vendor obtained as factory left overs which he stamped and sold to any Cobra owner that showed some proof of ownership.  A common explanation for adding tags to cars that didn’t originally get them was to aid in motor vehicle registrations in many states and some off shore countries.

Those CSX2201 and later tags were not the “first” aluminum chassis tags installed by AC Cars.  Starting at CSX2000 very early chassis had a plain piece of aluminum sheet metal stamped with a chassis number.  All the ones I have seen were in early cars with black gel coat fiberglass foot boxes.  The day one pictures are not clear enough to read but in general shape and size they resemble the tags AC Cars and Ken Rudd used on the Ford powered ACE RS2.6 cars.

Hello Dan,

When I first started working on CSX2079 the first thing I looked for was a foot box vin tag. I asked Tom if there was a tag. He told me in the 40+ years of owning 2079 he hadn't seen one. He said the number was on the latch and also on the front of the frame somewhere. I found the one on the latch.

I just made Tom aware of the ad for CSX2081 and told him to look at the photos for reference as 2079 is obviously 2 cars before. CSX2079 was originally a red car as well.

Regards,

I get a chuckle from the mind set that pushes a high dollar restored car with many attempted vintage (repro or otherwise ) details and at the same time doesn't take the time to fix or doesn't see the horrendously out of character highly visible blue after market spark plug wires and weird looking wire separators. It is not like it is a expensive or hard fix. I got a chuckle but what a shame IMHO that it is done that way on such a nice looking significant collector car.
