My car has a black nylon tie strap where that black linemans tape is suppose to be.  I always felt this was wrong but had not gotten around to research what is correct.  So this is great information.  My question is what is linemans tape?  I tried goggling it and nothing came up.  Can anyone shed some light on what this tape is?

Thank you,

Corey

I believe lineman's tape is cloth electrical tape (as opposed to plastic or woven vinyl). Try an old school hardware store or electrical supply house in your area (not a big box home improvement store). If you don't know of any, call an electrical contractor and ask.

Gaffers tape is usually very wide, but its the same tape, also used to tape the build sheet to the wiring harness

If any of you find a source, let me know. I need some too. I haven't seen anyone use that tape in decades.

Us left coasters called it friction tape.  Is this what you are looking for?

This is not PVC/vinyl, It is cotton based.

It has a few other uses in the cars such as holding the wire for the fuel sender to the wheel well in the trunk and holding the tail light harnesses to the tail light housings in the trunk of Mustangs.

+1  We found it once being used at one of the shows where the people working for the hotel were using it to hold the speaker and microphone cables/wires to the carpet to reduce the trip hazard.  A couple of us noticed it at the same time, stopped one of the workers and bought the rest of the roll and split it. Name for that specific brand was printed on the cardboard tube in the center. But there are many brands. Not as course as the thinner electric wrap stuff used and sold through auto parts stores. Not the shinny vinyl looking stuff with the cloth in it either that you sometimes see

It is entirely possible it was used on a "as needed" basis.

I have seen it in other unrestored saddle interiors

It also could have dried up and fallen off. ;)

I seen what looked like where it would go, but the cruise control switch is mounted there.

Cruise in a Shelby? That's cool.

Any idea on where to get the black lineman's tape?  Not having any luck on the web.
