Final word on 68 tachs
« on: February 06, 2018, 12:28:45 PM »
Since the Bullitt car has shown up a club member with a body shop has bought two 68 390 GT fastbacks and is going to make them into Bullitt cars and cash in on the publicity. Both cars have 6K tachs and he thinks that someone removed the 8K tachs. My info to him was only Shelbys and 68.5s came with 8K tachs. He says any 68 GT Mustang got an 8K tach since that's what the Bullitt has. What is the real story on what got an 8K tach? :-\

    390 or less =6,000
    428CJ or PI =8,000

Is "my" understanding. Others may have a different opinion.

Are the cars autos or 4spds?
Auto cars you had to order the tach as an option, 4spds it came standard.
I think all 68s had the 8K tach but as we know Ford did interesting things.
Maybe some 6Ks were left over from 67 and used?
I personally think a 8K tach with a 390 is funny because you really don't get them over 6K anyway!

I have never seen a 67 or 68 390 Mustang with an 8 grand tach...4 speed or Automatic....however, since McQueen had a 67 Shelby steering wheel installed in the Bullitt car...he could have easily had an 8 grand tach..140 speedo....installed.... ;D

The Bullitt car has a 120 mph speedometer. It's highly unlikely the tach was changed out but not the speedometer. But like they say. Anything is possible.

That's because it is a Shelby. 67/68 GT350 got 8k tachs.

Could the 8K tach have been an option in 68?

No option for the 8K tach on a 390. It's an anomaly or someone added/replaced it.

The 68 Mustang brochure on pg 12 shows a 8,000 tach and states available with any V8.

For 67 only the 289 Hi-Po got the 8,000 - the other V8' s got the 6,000.
All Shelby's were 8,000.

   Vcode ,
I believe that was a "stock'' photo of the Mustang tach option in general. Ralley Packs were often pictured that way too. Similar deal 8K  for K code only in 65-66. I'm sticking with that until I see a "Marti" that shows the option on a non 428 powered Mustang.

If I am not mistaken (this time), I don't remember any references to the tach on the build sheet. With all due respect to Mr.Gaines (genuflected when I said that), I HAVE seen 68 Shelbys with 6,000 rpm tachs, way, way, way in the past.

There is also something about some with "redlines" and others without?

This was a long, long time ago when I got yelled at to get a hair cut and my pants were too tight? Way before anyone was reproducing anything (except maybe kids). So long ago, I don't even recognize me in the pictures?

So my PREDICTION is that this will remain unsolved even though this thread may linger on for years?
