Congratulations from 6S1348. Love the green...

Les
...found 6S1348 after a full year of searching. It was in a garage I passed every day on the way to work. I looked at cars in front yards, back yards, storage garages, in fields, and under trees. I found a 65 that had hit a tree and was bent all the way to the back...

So, one thing I think I'd like to fix on the car is the rear end.  I understand the current rear didn't come with the car.  I'm still learning so bear with me.  I understand this is a 1966 rear but not the correct one for a Shelby.  Mine came originally with a detroit locker if that makes a difference.  The story goes that when my car was imported back to the US with a 65 Shelby the rears were swapped when both were restored simultaneously.  The 65 has a 66 rear as well but it currently has overriders on it.  I have the original metal tag that came with my rear.

Could you please confirm this rear didn't come with my car?

Are the rear ends date coded?

Is there an external indication that the rear is a detroit locker?

You have gotten some good information on the styles of housings. There are instances of the '65 style being installed in '66 cars, but the cars are usually earlier production times than yours.

You and I have talked about the tag, but here it is for the others.

3L89=3.89 ratio with Detroit Locker
6=1966
B=Feb
D=4th week (Feb in this case)

Pretty cool to see a Detroit Locker in a '66. It's pretty unusual.

What about the 964 ?

Supposedly the axle manufacturing plant...no specific data though.

Earlier tags have "SP" here. Of course, '66 models usually have "C6ZX" numbers too.

It's very unusual to have a factory installed Detroit Locker in a '66. 6S1066 has a pretty unique original tag to go along with that option!

It's been my experience the 'L' stands for limited slip, not Locker. While a limited slip will drag the outside wheel if having been parked for a while, they do not have the ratcheting experience of a Locker.

While that may be true, on the early GT350s, Detroit Lockers were offered and installed, rather than Traction Locks.

Hey Brant, what does the "B" on the top-right of the tag stand for? I think I've seen tags with either A, B or C in that position.

Thanks,
Steve
