Question on S7MS6582 Shelby-American Cobra Le Mans valve covers

Side-Oilers

I have the "Cobra Le Mans" valve covers that were on my KR's 427 side-oiler when I bought it in 1982.  Removed them in '83 when the engine went BANG.

I have recently been thinking about putting the covers on the KR's current aluminum side-oiler.   Or on my Kirkham's similar side-oiler.

Question:  Were these originally on a '67 GT500?  Cobra?  KR?   Or, just available as a separate S-A part?

Mine have been electroplated chrome (or chromed by some other method) and painted black in between the ribs.  I realize that probably wasn't original.

They are cast with "Shelby American Inc. S7MS6582".

One cover has the round breather grommet C7AE-6A892-A

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

68- later. The 67 Cobra- Le Mans cover is different. All have the round PCV hole in the grommet. Are you referring to the hole in the actual cover being round?

Thanks for the info, Keith.

Just the grommet is round. Hole is like the other side...for an oil fill cap.

The S7MS part number is confusing me.  Does that mean "Service"?

Thanks,
Van

S7MS - is typical for Shelby parts of a certain generation (year).  On most if not all Shelby "unique" parts.

Great, thanks.   I'll put them on my car.

Do you think those were originally chromed?  Or did a PO have that done?

Shelby offered no chromed aluminum covers, or polished. They are as cast with polished raised find and lettering, and of course the black crinkle finish, which yours should have with the polished raised fins and lettering. Those are the right design for your '68. Not cheap when an FE goes "boom", eh? lol

67 Lemans sandcast covers had polished highlights,  68 Diecast Lemans black wrinkle covers had brushed (belt sanded)  highlights

Yes, I mentioned the polished raised portion on the 67. The set I have weren't high polish either. However, I have noted most of the ones I have seen restored tend to be a high polish.

Thanks to all.  I think I will put them on my Kirkham.  I like how the ones I have look as chromed.

Those are actually 68-70. However, I had my covers chromed as cast. They are so much easier to keep clean.

The diecast Cobra Lemans in two lines valve covers were only used in production on 68 Shelby's . 69/70 used different valve covers.

Bob, so to clarify:  Are my covers correct for a KR, excepting that they have been chromed?

Thanks,
Van

Van,somewhat. They are the correct style regardless of the markings inside . They have been polished within a inch of their life to be chrome plated so all of the edges have been rounded off which is not a desirable thing. I would not want to use them on a original KR because of the physical condition and the fact that they are chromed and not black wrinkle. This is especially true given the nominal price of correct looking current repros. FYI those would not look any better painted given the polishing IMO . I suppose if the KR in question has been highly personalized the chromed ones wouldn't stand out as different much. That is just me others may have a different opinion with their own car.

Thank you, Bob. That all makes sense.
