Early 1965 Gas Cap. Tether or not?
« on: June 10, 2019, 11:58:35 PM »
I have been looking for a correct gas cap for my 1965, early production GT350. Tether or no tether for the gas cap? I've heard no tether is correct as the later 65 and 66 cars had the cable to attach the gas cap to the car

Believe you will find the time period when any Shelby's were built at San Jose the metal tether/cable retainers were in used and being installed.

Have October 64 built Mustangs documented with the new and improved gas caps originally

Hope this helps

The no bail wire gas cap was phased out around May/June of '64.  Considering the first batch of regular GT350's were not built at San Jose until December '64, there is no chance they ever came with the early cap.

If your car still has the original taillight panel you can also check the holes in it for the attachment for the gas neck filler, if you want further confirmation :)

Sounds like a plan! So the top says FORD and is written in black and the bottom says MUSTANG in red? Is there a date code on the inside? Just trying to figure out nos, vs original vs repro

The small Stant mfg marking on the backside is the typical confirmation method.
