Need tips for removing rear glass without damaging rubber seal
« on: September 12, 2019, 03:06:32 PM »
Anyone have tips/method/suggestion for way to remove rear fastback glass without damaging the rubber window seal?   If possible, id like to save/reuse the original rubber seal.

Looking at it,  wondering if better to pull glass out of seal (somehow) or perhaps possible to pull glass and seal together.

Thanks

First you will need to remove the stainless trim.  Most  likely you will encounter
a lot of black sealant.  You may need to carefully remove the excess.  I would
protect the adjacent paint all the way around.

I would suggest having 3 people for this project.  Two inside who will take the
seal lip and push it away from the body.  Two people working carefully along the
top should be able to release the window and then work down the sides.  The
person outside will keep the window from falling.  Be careful not to tear the headliner.

There is a probability that the glass could be broken if too much stress is put
on the glass as its' pushed out.  There will be old sealer everywhere (if it was
properly sealed) and will quite a mess.  WD 40 can be a good cleaner.

I just use an Orange Heavy Duty round Extension Cord.  Remove all the Exterior Stainless Trim and the Clips.  On the Inside of the Car, insert the Extension Cord under the Rubber seal and just apply Even Pressure pushing the Glass out.

In the two scenarios discussed above,  will the seal be coming out with the glass.  Or to ask another way... is the seal lip on the interior side being manipulated so that the rubber seal and glass are removed together.

Thanks for these suggestions.

Rubber and seal are coming out together.  The seal would stretch too much if
the window was forced from the seal, or maybe tear.  Clean up of the seal
will be a real mess.

Make sure to use even pressure. When pushing distribute the pressure evenly throughout your hand and fingers and don’t use too much pressure

The upper tight corners are normally the biggest issue - you will likely need to work them in small increments changing angle while applying slight pressure (I use a thin metal spoon - handle end) or a plastic/nylon glass tool.

Sometimes you cnn free the bottom end first and swing it up and out but I prefer (more room to work) from the top

Follow up:  Big thanks for the tips.  I was able to remove rear glass by myself using the previously mentioned extention chord trick and upward pressure spread across finger tips of both hands.  Pressed out top first then slid forward.   Followed by 3 hours of cleaning and flossing the gasket.

Glad to hear, the Extension Cord has never let me down.
