Sounds of a Porsche 917

My love for the Shelby and Mustang stuff does not negate my appreciation for other amazing cars. Gotta love that flat 12 engine roar!

Small block eight so live she feels
There she's parked beside the curb
Engine revving to disturb
She's the princess from his past
Red paint gold stripes damned she's fast"

Such a sweet cacophony, only outdone by the 917-30 which is said to have killed Can-Am racing.

Most of the surviving 917 Porsche race drivers like Brian Redman, Gerard Larrousse and Vic Elford  admit that these cars scared the living daylights out of them....1,000+ hp!

Has anyone here has the chance to drive one? If so what was it like? I think they are one seaters. Someone named Bruce Canapa works on these cars and may own one or two. Adam Carolla spoke a lot about Canals and I think he is in California.

Bruce has a great collection and drives in various vintage/Reunion races mainly on the west coast. He owns a 917K himself, but has worked on various large bore machines in his amazing shop.

deathsled, great clip, you need to turn up the volume full ! awesome sound !

NC TRACKRAT, I think your talking about the 917/30 Can-Am cars, Mark Donohue's "Sunoco" car had 1200hp with the boost

cranked, the endurance cars like the one in the clip had between 580 & 630 hp, they were still quick, the early '69 enduro cars

were very unstable, as you said it scared the S out of them. I was lucky to see them in action in the 6 hour at Watkins Glen in

1970, with Siffert and Rodriguez amongst others driving, those were the days  8) it was fender to fender racing, no prisoners, like

 in Trans-Am, image included

Here's Bruce Canepa in a 917/10 1,100hp: https://jalopnik.com/driving-a-1-100-horsepower-twin-turbo-porsche-917-10-lo-1829488209.  One source quoted the 917/30 at max boost as developing 1,600 hp!  Here he is in the Wyer Gulf 917/30: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnFnq1uTyBM

Thank you gentlemen for the Bruce Canepa info.  I'd like to see a 917 up close some day but I doubt there is anything like that here in the Mid-West but one never knows. I would like to drive one on the track even at a pedestrian pace would be amazing.  I have not raced a car myself so I am green as they come but I have imagined getting my SCCA license just to have it.

A virtual reality drive with the 917 at the Nurburgring.  This looks serious hard core virtual reality.  I may need to consider this as an option for the long winter months.  Quite impressive!

Mid-America (Elkhart Lake) near Milwaukee and Mid-Ohio are close by you and these outstanding courses usually have vintage races. You just never know what might show up.

I'll be on the lookout next year.  I'm going to check out the virtual reality headset for the long winter in the meantime.

Pretty awesome car!  And, yes - Adam Corolla is quite the racer.  He was racing at Laguna Seca during Monterrey Car Week.
Nothing beats a classic!

the "Hippie Car"917LH is right in Philly at the Simeone Museum.
They don't race it, but they do run it around the huge parking lot on various "Demonstration Days", visitors can hear it run and stick your nose (or camera) pretty much anywhere. I forget the exact numbers, but one of the Museum guys reviewed some of the design technical details; and how hard the Porsche engineers worked to keep the HP for that cooling fan down to something "reasonable"  ???
There are some photos, history, and videos here:

The long tail (Langheck) 917's looked so different, almost unbalanced visually, compared to the "base" 917's.
All for the added stability and aero especially for the Mulsanne straight. As great as the 917's sound I still favor the ear splitting sound of the V12 Matra's.
