Then what is it?

Completely different model of transmission using a cast iron main body and typically used on mid sized small blocks -  Installed in the late 60's through very early 80's 

Similar in some ways to a C4 just designed to handle a little more HP in stock form

The FMX trans was a real pos in regards to performance transmissions. They made millions of them for many applications back in the day but they were very heavy compared to a c 4 trans so most performance transmissions were built c4s for small block cars. Ford made a small block c6 that came out I believe in 70 or 71, a great transmission back in the day that had many upgrades that could be had, like custom valve bodies, shift programs, converters etc. Then there was the BEEFY c6 for big block applications which is a tuff hombre but very heavy. Most racers use a modified c4 that can easily handle over 1000 HP these days. Times have sure changed.

The FMX had a bad rep in the circles I ran in.

Never owned one, but a friend was always breaking his and he is the one who called it an iron C4.

No  I'm not a trans expert but prior to the release of the C6, the FMX was used as the "heavier duty" trans in the large car ( Galaxy & Lincoln) & light truck.
I seem to recall it was also used in 427 Cobra automatics.

A FMX trans is its own type of transmission, it was designed as a low performance version of fords typically mid sized cars and trucks. They were not designed as anything performance wise but performed admirably in its role as intended, a great cruiser type of tranny.

While door protection strips were common in the day I personally have never seen them applied to a 69 in this fashion. Touch wood they did their job well.
