65 Shelby Tri y header flange thickness?
« on: November 01, 2019, 03:17:53 PM »
Anyone know the original header to head flange thickness on 65 Shelby tri-y headers? I have seen 1/4", 5/16" and later repo's with 3/8". If you have a photo of an original header in that area around the flange that would be helpful. Thanks

Contact Scott Fuller. I sent him a couple pairs of original tri y so that he could use as patterns about a year ago .

I now have 3 sets and I am trying to find out what the original thickness was. I have one set at 1/4" and 2 sets at 5/16. Each of them have some small flaw. But I want to start with the one that is closest to what would be on my 5S243. The 66 flanges may have been the thicker ones in which case I will have two extra with 5/16" flanges.

Probably just a typo but those two statements do not match.

Lol. True! The headers are original but not sure if the flange is as I’ve only had them in my possession for 15 years and they were with the car 30 years before that. I don’t know about the first few years.

Headers are not typically practical to be rebuilt . It is not likely or practical for example that someone would go to the trouble of separating the tubes from the flange to reuse one or the other. You can tell if the headers are original by the way they are welded to the flange . Do your headers have a tack weld where the tubes go into the flange?

OK, now we are getting somewhere. Of the 3 sets I have, one measures .25". The others are 5/16 (.3125). Another interesting thing is that the 5/16" sets have a raised area around each port to help sealing. The 1/4" pair does not. Here a are some pics of the .25" set.

The set you have pictured above is not consistent with my originals. Too many tack welds in the wrong places. IMHO an early copy. MANY have copied them over the years and the "finger print" for the originals is different.
