The 4 bolt main 429 CJ/SCJ blocks I have are stamped with these vin #  1Z580646 and 1G268468 on them.

Maybe just stating the obvious but here we go.
1971 block

646 and 468 last 3 digits of VIN

Pretty straight forward. For this engine and period you have

Year - Assembly plant (of the vehicle) - Sequential VIN

1G268468  = 1971- Chicago Il - Sequential VIN which also will identify model, body type and manufacturer (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

1Z580646 =  1971 -  St Louis Mo  - Sequential VIN which also will identify model, body type and manufacturer (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

  Because of the assembly plants noted the cars were Torinos or Cyclones.

Ranchero also at same ass'y plant?  I had a '70 Ranchero GT with 429. Fast & fun car/truck.

2006 FGT. Tungsten. Whipple, HRE 20s, Ohlin coil-overs, 3.90 gears. 210.7 mph.
