GT350 Plate
« on: December 26, 2019, 05:48:35 PM »
Can I get all of your opinions on this item i just picked up off eBay?  Seller claims it's from Downtown Ford of Sacramento, CA (although the Registry has it listed as Downtown Motors back in the day).  I didn't purchase it because of the dealer frame, but instead because of the GT350 plate itself.  I have a couple 1967 plates, which I love, from dealership displays.  I'm thinking this was probably hung on a GT350 back in '65-'70.  He claims you can see it in the picture, but I'm having a hard time seeing that.  Have any of you ever seen one of these before?  He also claims that his friend purchased it from the dealership back in 1980.

Here is what the ad said:

"Up for sale is an extremely rare Dealer frame from Downtown Ford in Sacramento CA. They used a special plate insert for the new Shelby That is stamped GT-350. The entire plate was finished all in blue. Then the face was finished in white to leave the raised boarder, numbers and letters in Blue. Also the original add from Downtown Ford in and on the cover of Autoweek dated Oct. 2 1965 showing the plate and frame. This plate and frame is believed to be the original. It is a must have for anyone having a Shelby GT-350 from Downtown Ford."

Too bad they aren't stamped like the originals.  Does anyone stamp them anymore?

I ran one of these plates on the front of my 66 for about 2 years and finally got pulled over by Wisc state patrol on my way to Road America.  cost me $90 to fight it and lost . While the officer was writing me the ticket,  a small caravan of about 20 Plastic GM Vehicles  passed by and I told her she needs to pull over the entire group as all had USA 1 front plates. She gave me a eff you look and handed me the ticket. I told her she missed a chance to get her quota for next month by not pulling them all over. She just waved and off I went with a  lighter wallet.

In Ohio cars registered as Vintage/Collector cars (Over 25 years old) can legally run a vintage plate of that cars' year provided no one else is already, only rear plate is required.  Of course you have to register it with the Ohio DMV.

State Troopers are generally there to "Educate and Correct"  Sadly had it been a male that wasn't a millennial you would have been advised and quickly dispatched.
