Driving back from SW Florida to home in NE next week. We're beginning to scout out retirement locales in the Carolinas/Georgia area and looking to do some exploring next week on the trip home. My wife expressed a desire for an over 55 community and/or easy access to golf.
Do these communities have 3 car garages to keep the Shelbys close by?
Any recommendations on location?

Don't worry, we are NOT east coast liberals headed to the sunbelt, rather GOP'ers lost in the land of Taxachusetts.

Thanks Doug

Pretty much any location in NC would suit you.  We prefer the Piedmont area because it's in the middle between the mountains and the beach.  For golf, Pinehurst is ideal but great courses are in abundance statewide.  If you're coming up I-95, take the time to check out the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area.  Lots of car-crazy folks over there, too.

+1 for the Carolinas.  I live in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area, pretty much equal distance to the mountains in one direction and the coast in the other.  Pick a house near a lake, and you have the best of all worlds.

I am going to be based in Raleigh. I will miss the five minute rides to DFW. I have grown tired of the Californians moving here that can't grasp what liberal socialist policies did to my state of origin.
Perhaps a new place for the gathering of striped snakes?

Vehicles 35 years old or older may be registered as "Antique Autos" and as such will be valued at a maximum of $500 for tax purposes.  In essence, your property tax on such a vehicle will be negligible.

So don't own a 1985+ car worth big $$$$  ;)

The whole package has to be considered when relocating.

An ocean view property sounds great until you price hurricane insurance!

I retired from Florida in 1998 and moved to Winstom Salam NC. At that time homes with land was very affordable along with auto insurance and property taxes. In the past few years all of them have increased. I suggest you check into the each states personal income tax which takes. (NC taxes are based on all income even from pensions from other states)  Ga. And South Caroline offer tax exempts for seniors on incomes which NC does not.  Looking back I have enjoyed living in NC but wish I had looked into each states tax laws, I could have saved some money!

Your last sentence says a lot and you are welcome to look at Tennessee as per that last sentence, that is where we are in the process of moving to, lots of nice things, and positives, with the exception of State Sales Tax. Oh, HOA's are a pain, since when did they get so popular?
