Hi SAAC-

1969 GT500- looking carefully over transmission (in car), so not seeing any potential VIN on top. Has correct PGB AF1 tag. Case cast on 3/3/69, about 2 months before the assembly date of the car. Case casting is RF C8AP 7006, my questions is on that "car line" letter, the "A", which to my understanding typically meant the transmission was made for an unspecified Ford product, and that transmissions cast for Mustangs typically have a "Z" car line casting. I seem to recall that this is not a hard and fast rule however, I can't recall for sure. What say you?

Thanks in advance!

Indeed it did- your forum searching skills are better than my own- many thanks!

You didn't mention if it has the CJ trans  "R" marked servo or CJ specific cast iron tail shaft.

It does have the R servo and the cast iron TS.

Hopefully you read the discussion in the link on the casting numbers and how they relate to the casting numbers on your C6  which should answer your question.

What does the last letter D mean on the casing?
On mine is:
C8OP 7006 D

The D refers to the change level. Meaning there was an A, B, and C case before the D came out. If Ford makes some minor change to a part but doesn't want to change the part number, they change the last letter to reflect the minor change. They also sometimes skip letters. The 428 Cobra Jet intake manifold is a perfect example of this. The last letter of the part number originally was an A. Then a C version came out. There was even a small overlap in dates for the A and the C version. But no one I'm aware of has ever seen a B version. Another use for the suffix letters I know of is on 68 Mustang C stripe kits ( And probably all Ford stripe kits). The part number to all the different colors is the same. The only difference is the last letter. The last letter identifies the color of the stripes. .

Tks
My car is built jannuary 30 1969. Does it mean that it should have more an A or B suffix ?
I know my trans is not the original one from the car as it was 4 speed when I bought it 28 years ago.

After a little checking, I determined that the 7006 in the engineering number refers to a transmission case. C8OP 7006 A is a C4 transmission case. C8OP 7006 D is a C6 case. I couldn't find a B or C engineering number. Others hear may know what they are if they exist. So in the case of this engineering number, it's kind of like the stripe kits. Different suffix numbers are for different Transmissions. The C6 case in my 1968 car has a D suffix. So to determine when the transmission in your car was built, you'll have to do some date code checking on the parts or look for a partial Vin stamping on the top rear of the case just in front of where the tail shaft housing mounts.
