Original grill
« on: March 02, 2018, 11:07:32 PM »
I have two front grills, on one the edges of the horizontal bars are flat when viewed from the end of the grill (off the car) and the other has an angle cut that reveals more of the slat. Which is original or are both original? All the rivets are the same on both. Thanks

How about a picture or two?

Interesting question.  Looking forward to answer myself.

There she's parked beside the curb

Red paint gold stripes damned she's fast"

Thanks for posting some pictures. Not the challenge is to find some just as detailed from original cars and service replacement sources as well as reproductions to compare.

On the one with the flat fins, can you bend the metal easily with your hands?  If so, would be an indication that it's a reproduction.

The grille on 6S550 has the flat cut ends, and is the original grille. Ron
Original owner of 6S550. Owned since 1967. 64,000 Miles, all body original except hood and front valance. All glass original except windshield. Still has aluminum 4 speed. Has replacement Mico.  Also own 1966 Mustang convertible. They are drivers, not trailer queens.

Neither grill will bend without effort and then both spring back to original shape. To deform either, they would probably crack and break.

6S1348 has flat cut edges.

I have to add it looks like to me that the edges are slightly rounded and not perfectly flat.

...found 6S1348 after a full year of searching. It was in a garage I passed every day on the way to work. I looked at cars in front yards, back yards, storage garages, in fields, and under trees. I found a 65 that had hit a tree and was bent all the way to the back...

What are the rivets on an original grille?  Are they like a cap or with the traditional hole?

They have a curved head surface with no hole. The pop rivet type with a hole is a easy tell for a later service replacement.
