I found this interesting in the article.

"Another non-standard item on 6S289 is the Toploader transmission. Russ and my dad confirmed that they had never had the transmission changed. Russ added that he now knows what Shelby meant when said that he had installed a "special shifter" in this car."

Being that this was tracked back to the original owner, it seems like some non-standard parts worked their way into standard production at SA.  I have heard that some owners had cars that received top loaders originally from Shelby but I dismissed it as a dealer change, apparently not.  I guess SA ran out of aluminum T10's or had issues with them and they let the top loaders go through.

To make the transmission story on 289 more interesting, the other Autoweek GT350, 290, had a T-10.

Thanks everybody for the kind words about mom and 6S289.
To answer one question, yes-we still have 6S289.

By the way, in case you are interested, I just added photos and a link to the video of the women's clothing line photo shoot that 6S289 was in. They are in the "In Media" tab on the 66GT350.com site.

I attached one photo from the photo shoot below.

Mom loved going to car shows.
I found some more photos of Mom with 6S289.

Photo 1 - Mom in the passenger seat of 6S289 accepting an award for her car.

Photo 2 - Mom giving thumbs-up for 6S289, which is right behind her.

This photo of 6S289 was taken soon after the restoration was completed - in early 2007.

The photo includes the following people:

- Jeff (1st from left) and Chris (3rd from left) - the main restorers of 6S289
- Current owners family (5th through 7th from left)
- Russ and Marlene Goebel (8th and 9th from left) - original owners of 6S289
- Current owners Mom (10th from left) - 2nd owner of 6S289
- Current owner - me - (11th from left - or 1st from right...) - 2A owner of 6S289

Oh - you may have noticed that the photo is signed by a few familiar people. I took this photo to a few events and had it signed. It makes for a nice memento.

COMPETITION PRESS and AUTO WEEK (later AUTOWEEK) published an article in its December 26, 1964 issue about the new Shelby “Mustang GT, powered by Cobra”.  As we all know, this new car from Shelby way back then, is what we now know as the GT350. The article, by Ed Leslie, gave readers an early glimpse into the beautiful car we all enjoy.

The Co-Publishers of CP&AW at the time of the article were Bill Finefrock and Russ Goebel. They must have kept a close eye on this new creation from Shelby, and thought it was pretty amazing, as CP&AW purchased two 1966 GT350’s directly from Shelby 10 months later. GT350 cars VIN 6S289 and 6S290 were delivered to CP&AW’s San Francisco office via Shelby’s trailer on November 5, 1965.

Russ drove 6S289 and Bill drove 6S290.

More than 50 years ago, in August, 1967, my parents (mom) purchased 6S289 from CP&AW.

Nearly 53 years after the Mustang GT article was published, in September 2017, the same publication, AUTOWEEK (formally Completion Press and AutoWeek), published an article about 6S289, their former GT350.

In 2016, Russ and his wife joined me (and 6S289) at the Cobra Experience (SAAC-43 Friday Night Social location) Cobra Day car show. They hadn’t seen 6S289 since the photo shoot (photo in earlier post) taken in 2007 – nine years earlier.

To make the continuing story even sweeter, Russ and I communicate quite regularly and my wife and I plan to spend our 30th Anniversary with Russ and his wife at their Inn later this year.

A link to a leisurely drive in 6S289, sitting in the same seat- using the same Ray Brown seat belt-  Mom and Dad used while first driving 6S289 over 50 years ago.

Enjoyable!
