Here is a picture of original rear view mirror from 66 Hertz. Is it true they were painted this color for easy spotting in Shelby's lot prior to shipping? Is this red paint rear view correct for a 66 Hertz?
I don't believe that all Hertz cars mirrors were painted red. I am not sure if it has been determined the reason why some were red and others not. Maybe someone can clarify.
Mine wasn't . Must have been a "location'' thing.
Randy, mine was also California car (Los Angeles) and was not painted. It could have been a Hertz thing like the tape on the radiator perhaps.
The red mirror is from a Maryland car if this helps
Mine has (had) the red mirror. I heard a rumor that the Hertz cars were Indentified by mirro color, mine was rented out of National Airport in DC/Virginia
Discussed a little here....

The mirror on 6S550 is not red. Owned it since ford sold it in 1967. Ron

Don't believe it was done by Ford (San Jose) or Shelby. Hertz allowed different regions to do somethings different from other regions. One example is the inventory identification labeling methods. Also it does not (so far) appear that this "red mirror" detail was repeated in later years on Hertz cars or at least none have popped up yet
+1 I've never seen a red mirror on anything but an east coast Hertz.
1411 has a standard Mustang mirror, not red. But it does have a Dynamo label with a number on the inside of the glove box door.

I would love to see a picture of that location if you are inclined to share. Thanks in advance.

Would guess ( don't get to see many NY assigned Hertz cars on the West coast) that the Dynamo tape was the plastic version rather then the metal/foil style used at other districts. Thanks for sharing
I believe that brand name of label-makers was "Dymo".
My Dymo Tapewriter from the early 60's.

My newer version 1980-90's
To imprint metal tape you must use the early style ( like Kingchief) or later chromed (metal) version not the plastic one. I have several rolls of metal tape and the metal tool all original Dymo material. I do not have any of the original aluminum ( foil like) adhesive backed material used on the Hertz cars.
Randy
The metal verses the plastic tapes usage appears to depend on the Hertz district and what they were using if they were using this system (not all did) to mark the cars based on what I've collected over the years. Have found a number of non-Shelbys also that were rental cars also that had the same identification methods used. Depending on where that local area applied the tape some with "hang around" longer over the years. Just what I've found collecting details over the decades
Just wondering, any idea what Hertz locations used this type of identification?
Not LAX , That is for sure.
