Title: Anyone use a GPS Speedometer in any car? Sender used?
Post by: Cobrask8 on November 22, 2020, 12:59:19 PM

Looking to replace the speedometer in my FFR. Going from fluctuating mechanical to smooth GPS.

Will use the Autometer Elec Speedometer, but do have a choice of sending units. So, asking if any of you here have used a GPS system, what components did you use, and how did it work?

Used a system sold by Speed Hut in a project a few years back.  It was a new speedo and GPS module worked great

+1 on the Speedhut unit, I think called Speedbox.    I bought it without the cable and once I determined where to mount the
box, I brought the box and speedo (to determine what kind of attachments to fit) to a Speedo repair shop and they made a custom length cable.

Where did you mount the GPS antenna?   I have a Kirkham, so magnetic mount will no workey.   Definitely not drilling any holes in the body.

It was mounted in a fiberglass car so I have the GPS pickup unit in one of the fenders.    That can't be done in a metal car.
If Cobrask8's FFR is 'glass, should be easy to mount just about anyway, hidden away.

Thanks for the info. A benefit of a 'glass body.

Does anyone have an idea of where to place the antenna in a Kirkham?
