Title: Possible GT350 engine? Or J code?
Post by: chiefbueno88 on April 29, 2021, 06:55:14 PM
Just trying to get some insight on a block I was able to get last week. I've narrowed it down to either a GT350 or a J code mustang. The kid I bought it from told me that the engine came with his project mustang he purchased from an older gentleman. Older gentleman told him he pulled it from a wrecked Shelby. Here are the numbers I have off of it at the moment. I'll have to get more numbers tomorrow when I unload it.

Engine cast: C8OE-6015-A
Date code: 8C30
Partial vin: 8F178378
Intake manifold cast: C8ZE-9425-A
Date code: 8C27

Head code C8OE
Other head casts underneath: 302 / 88 / 21 / F
4V is cast under the valve covers

I appreciate your time and any input.

Ryan

Not from a GT350.

GT350 motors would have a "8T------" derivative serial number.

Well that makes it easy. So all GT350s were built at the Metuchen plant?

In 68 they were built at Metuchen . 69/70 built at Dearborn . 65,66,67 were built at San Jose.

First rule of selling an old 60s Ford block. It's worth more because the guy I got it from said the guy he got it from got it from a guy who pulled it out of a Shelby. I would imagine that SA got some experimental blocks to play with as did H&M but those would have oddball casting numbers. All the rest are just off the shelf blocks.

I appreciate the info everyone.
For me, I scored a complete year correct block for my 68 coupe. Pretty cool it's a high compression J code engine. If it turned out to be a Shelby engine, just would've blown my mind. But all in all, can't complain. Got it for $550.
