Title: Points wicks/felts
Post by: shelbydoug on May 11, 2021, 09:46:53 AM
Where can I get some of the fabric felt wicks that are on the points rubbing blocks? The wick that is supposed to be under the rotor at the top of the shaft also?

I stole some off of a couple of old Accell points I had but I need to find another source of new ones?

Anyone know a part number and a source for them?

I have not seen that on OEM Autolite or Motorcraft point sets. You do see them on aftermarket point sets like these for example:

True, but that doesn't answer the question now does it? :D

I think it does - they are for sale. All you need is to buy them.

...and the wick for the distributor shaft, under the rotor?

Here's one source for the oiling pad: https://www.ebay.com/itm/380936991984 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/380936991984)

There's got to be others.

Kind of pricey for a felt plug.

Yes, a bit of an elusive sucker too.

Found 2 part numbers in the 60-68, and 65-72 MPC's; FEK-12133-A and D0RY-12133-A, but doesn't look like it was ever available separately from Ford.

Strange that such a simple part is so elusive?

"Back in the day" a set of points cost was $1.  I'm thinking the points "Felt" was never serviced.  Just grab a $1 part and put them on.

Is the felt for the distributor shaft wick under the rotor anything special? In the past I have gone to the fabric store and bought felt and cut a piece for the shaft.

I have only seen that points felt for the cam on the Blue Streak points sets.  I think there is a little paper in the box that mentions the felt being impregnated with something and not needing any additional lube.  There is a Blue Streak grease for the points cam, called Lubri-Cam.

I will check my NOS parts stash . I "may" still have a pair of "point felts" in a Ford package. Yes at "one time" they were serviced. Be patient and I will look.

One needs to be old enough to remember them? Of course it could have been just another one of those psychotic episodes again? ::)

For use on trucks with transistorized ignition.

He follows our posts. Kinda' pricey. Do they have the Ford logo? Having to having originals is the epitome of anal retentiveness?

Here is the distributor parts drawing.
As Randy stated the 12A055 is shown for the transistorized system.

Thank you for posting the diagram. It's just a curiosity to me but why would only the transistorized distributor have them?

Aren't they the same points as used in the other dual point distributors?

The detail on the shaft felt, under the rotor, isn't showing clearly. Is the * for the felt or is it for the retaining clip?

I have found the felts under the rotor on many a standard points style distributor, but of course I'm not positive I could say they were there "day 1", but I wonder if so many individuals really were so concerned if in servicing the points said: "oh look, the felt is missing, I had better go down to Ford and get one" (but I have at times found some ragging material substituted, apparently in some of these possible instances of concern); but I do know the felts were continued into the Dura-Spark era for sure.       :)

I could see where the lube, packing or grease could dry out and freeze the points cam from advancing.

I don't think Ford does much arbitrarily? Another example that I can think of are the drip tabs under the Boss 302 valve covers.

The round felt under the rotor "should be there" on all distributors from at least 59 and up.

The felts under the point rubbing block was added to decrease the need to adjust points because of the transistorized ignition "box". A special high temp non hardening "point cam grease" was developed and used by Ford.

Is there a service part number for that felt? I don't see one.

10 aren't worth $89 to me without the Ford logo on the felts?
