It looks like there were no mirrors on the car when first built. (uncertain of the date on the photo)

There isn't anything else that quite sounds like a '40. They are just amazing vehicles.
On the big tracks like Daytona, you can hear them from the distance. The Doppler effect as they pass you is unique to them as well.
I can listen to that all day.
It has that deep raspy sound. Ya gotta love it!

It's been a few years, but I do think the web page it was on said it was from VIR.
Color photos were posted on the forum years ago and they also stated they were from VIR...but the details don't match.
The color photo show the class sticker on the door as 'CM" while the B&W photo only shows the class as 'C'.
Then we see side mirrors at the base of the windshield in the color photo, but no mirrors in the B&W photo
I'm just not convinced it was the same event, but it does have to be in spring / summer 1966.
Later in the year, the 'GULF' sticker on the front fender is replaced with a larger version and the mirrors move forward over the front wheels.
Nice video. Those 180 degree headers were mostly responsible for the awesome sound.
Here are a couple of shots of P/1049 at the Glen I took at the 1989 GT40 reunion.
1049 started life as a MK1 289 road car. That worked in its favor for 68 and later races since the FIA had banned the big block. Wyer/Gulf raced it early in the season until 1074 and 1075 could be built to do most of the racing in 68-69. (Ford closed FAV and Wyer took it over - calling the cars Mirage) 1075 won LeMans twice 68-69 1074 had its roof cut off and was used as a camera car for the movie LeMans where Wyer had switched his Gulf sponsorship to Porsche.
Wyer's last win was in 1975 with a Ford Cosworth Mirage that with the body off still shows its GT40 beginnings.
I've seen this one several times at various tracks in the east. First time I saw it in person was at Lime Rock. It's the one that I mentioned was a "GT40" in earshot of "the Englishman", and he came running over and threatened me with a lawsuit for calling it such since it was clearly a "Gulf".
It is a little confusing in person since it does have the flared rear "Gulf" decklid and wheels on it. It was also partially in Gulf colors with the orange Gulf wheels on it at the time.
As I recall it had a single 4v Boss 302 "appearing" engine in it with a "little bit different" headers then expected when I saw it around '92?
I suppose that having those changes to it is what makes it a "Gulf"?
As virtually all '40's are, it's rather unique and "very cool" and great to hear it run on the track under any configuration and conditions at all.
The Chevy guys have nothing to compare to it and the comparable Porsche would be probably a whale tail 917 flame thrower.
When Diamond had my aluminum BB heads, welding up the cracks, he made a comment about "aluminum being 23 cents a pound in scrap". I said "they only go on a '40 and that's a 10 million dollar car. How much are heads for a 10 million dollar car worth?"
They were building Pro Stock Camaro chassis' at the time at 35 thousand a pop and as predicted anyone had an issue dealing with their "kiss my ass" attitude in person at the time. I didn't but they had my heads and I had to be quite. They were using Chevy Pro Stock heads as door stops in the shop. :o
I will give this to them, they were absolute artists at welding aluminum, even stoned out of their heads with coke. That was a little nerve racking though. ::)
