Title: Intro and a GT 350 goes to Alabama
Post by: JBinAlabama on July 12, 2021, 10:47:16 PM
So have drooled over Shelby cars since I was 15.....I'm guessing that is a very common theme here in this group.
About 12 years ago I purchased a kit cobra since a real one was just out of reach. It has been a blast.
I took my son to a ford car show several years ago and asked him to show me his favorite car. He picked a 66 GT 350. it had original paint that was a little crackled and the seats were very tired and torn.......it was a BEAUTY!!!
He was about 14 at the time and suggested we trade the cobra in on the white with blue stripes fastback. I let him know that we needed about five more kit cobras to trade to be in the price range of what he liked. He is 19 now and it's still funny.
I found an ad sometime back and spoke with the  owner (he bought it in 1969 or 70, you can reference your guide). I contacted Howard Pardee to confirm that it was a legit car.
So, my son and I made the approximately 1,200 mile trip last week to get the car.
We left early Tuesday from Gulf Shores, Alabama and drove to friends who live in Springfield, VA.
We slept a few hours and drove up to northern PA Wednesday at 4:30am. Traffic and country roads turned it into about noon arrival time.
We met the husband and wife who have owned the car for over 50 years! Amazing really.
It's was an original Hertz car and about 40 years ago, he modified it to look like a 65MR model. Including a repaint of white with guardsman blue stripes.
The original engine took a break long ago and he replaced it. I have many spares including a hipo 289 from a gt convertible. I also have the radiator and both the original front and rear glass.
I'm not sure what we will do next with the car but I do want to accumulate all the correct pieces.
I may have a lead on the original auto transmission, but I still need the following.
Magnum 500 wheels
Autolite carb
Distributor
Cobra tach
Rear brake drum assemblies
T cobra oil pan
Steering wheel and center cap
Single reservoir master cylinder
Carpeting
Seat belts
Heater box
Valve covers
If you have any of these original items socked away and are willing to part with them, let me know.
I'm not sure we will begin changing anything right away except the engine.
It's really too much for the street and runs on 110 race fuel.
I'm not sure of the horsepower but it makes my 425hp cobra feel like a Prius in comparison.
So for all you veteran shelby owners, expect a lot of questions!

Congratulations

As far as the wish/Need list. Read, read, read the related threads for each piece on your list so you'll know what your looking for and what your not.  Be informed and educated so that you can review, ask good questions of the sellers and not have to rely on others . You made need to do that later for other details and help

DON"T think that just because you pay allot of money for a particular part its the right one or even a real one. Plenty of fakes of some of the things on your list.

After all of that get to posting a wanted list on this site and others. Happy hunting !!

Again congratulations for fulfilling a dream and hope 6S1300 makes you happy.

Welcome!  You've come to the right place.  My only advice in addition to what's been given above is to take your time and research before committing time and money to something you may have to re-do if done incorrectly.  I was told many years ago that, if I didn't do my homework, I'd spend many thousands of dollars correcting my mistakes.

You might want to post the serial number . Valve covers , tachs , and some other things changed from early to late.

Sorry , thank you. So black , closed letter valve covers , "bottom logo" tach , Impact ( possibly) seat belts , Autolite "blue" shocks.

Saw an original tach for sale by Jim Wicks at the Mid America Meet, Lower Cobra Logo as your car would have had

Great story, my sound advice, is to separate your "parts wanted" ad and place it in the proper classifieds subforum for such items.

Thanks everyone I'm super excited to be here!
I really bought this thing to be a driver but I want to go ahead and gather all the parts for a restoration at some point later for my son. I really appreciate all the advice from those who have been down this path before.
I'll continue looking for the items that I'm missing while I consider what the re-power temporarily would look like I'll continue looking for the items that I'm missing while I consider what the re-power temporarily won't look like.
Hopefully the forum will allow me to upload a video of this engine running, i've had a lot of muscle cars over the years and this particular engine is very strong. One of my other hobbies is old land rovers, and those prices have skyrocketed allowing me to purchase this car. I've honestly been pretty blessed to be in the right place at the right time. Thanks for all the advice

John, it was great talking with you the other day.  As I said, you among the best folks in the world for advice and encouragement.

Congratulations again on your purchase.
