Title: Los Angeles car registration....
Post by: Bigfoot on April 21, 2018, 01:49:16 PM
So my buddy bought his Shelby out of state in a state where you pay the sales tax there,...out of state.  CA sales tax is a little higher so he owes the difference.
We "get" that.
Question is....
Also a LA County "bounty?"....

If he paid say 6% out of state CA will charge him the difference. LA County has I think 9.5% sales tax so they'll hit him for 3.5%. It's interesting if I go to a different county and buy a car they still charge me the LA rate since that is the county I live in. They will also a % of the value on top of the registration - every year (personal property tax).

Yes, Montana works well.  Except if you get hassled by a fussy LEO in CA, over the plate not matching your driver's license state.

I realize that many people do this with their high end cars/RVs, etc. (I have too) and never get hassled.

My CPA told me that the CA State Board of Equalization (AKA the Tax Man) isn't too happy about it, however.

I chose to register my Kirkham, my KR, and three of my pricey Brand X sports cars in CA.  Paid the $$ and can thus rest easy.  (Plus, then those cars are eligible for original CA YOM plates or the new black and yellows. I have both kinds.)

No Los Angeles cannot charge additional sales tax. The taxes paid to the California DMV are for the state rate.

Not just Cali. In Seattle metro area, 10% sales tax on purchase and 1% per year for transit tax.

Easy to spend $20,000 on taxes buying a 50 year old Mustang

State rate can change based on County?
In CA?

Montana also. Permanent plate. Just purchased some high-end electronics and listed Montana on the sales invoice. No sales tax on them either.

Yes - you pay the rate of the county you live in. State tax is 6% and counties can add up to 4.25% - some cities also have an additional tax, LA added 1/4% to help the homeless and then couldn't figure out why the homeless population spiked. https://www.salestaxhandbook.com/california/sales-tax-map anything between 7.25 and 10.25%

Watch out for that "progressive" political statement.  When walking backwards, the asshole believes it is making forward progress.  8)

Not all of us...yet.

As a side note, Gov. Moonbeam(aka Jerry Brown)  has jacked up the registrations with his special tax.  This is to fix the roads and other infrastructure because the original gas tax money has been siphoned off for other projects.  Also, has taxed gasoline for the same purpose.  Just returned from San Antonio where gas is about a dollar cheaper than CA.  Made sure I gassed up in AZ before crossing the CA state line.

It's hard to figure out where to retire to. CA progressives (latin term for commie) are ruining all the good places WA CO AZ. They moved saying they were tired of CA politics/taxes and didn't change their voting pattern.

Substitute the word "human" as used by Agent Smith in The Matrix with "California Progressives" to sum them up?

Uh-Oh. The term was not defined, but I figured that I'd be getting the message - I mean the tax $$ bill  >:(
