Title: Mystery ‘67 Shelby Wheels
Post by: SFM66H on August 13, 2021, 11:17:06 AM
I have already posted this question in the SAAC 46 Convention thread, but thought I would also start a separate thread on it that may get more attention...

Who knows more about the beautiful wheels on this GT 500:

They look OUTSTANDING!!! They appear to be aluminum wheels CNC machined to replicate the 1967 Shelby hubcap!

Does someone here know the car - can you point me to the owner - or ask him for more info - like who made them, etc., etc.

Thanks,
Kieth

Hubcaps?

I looked at them closely, they are wheels.

My guess is Keith has it right - custom aluminum wheels made to resemble the '67 style hubcaps.

If so, ingenious me thinks.

They look like they are a larger diameter than 15", tire sidewalls are not tall ... maybe 17"?

I'll take a set !

as my car was originally a " caps " car I believe

those look so cool

I still say they're 'caps. Haven't you seen the inserts being used now on steel wheels that make them look like hubcaps?

Honda for one uses them.

Maybe that set was the inspiration for the '68s?

Those are not the same wheels. They are custom made for a customer (Frankenstang49) I believe by EVO D
This car may have had a + sized Mag Star wheel previsously

I agree with Richstang.  I walked up at looked at them because they caught my eye.  They are definitely custom wheels. They appeared to be at least 16 or 17 inch. I almost talked to the driver when I saw the car, but for some reason I did not.  Would have cleared up a lot of speculation.

Maybe we can make a forum order at their shop that we maybe get 10 or more wheel sets together? I would take 2 wheel sets. Who is in the game?

They're billet 17X7 one-off to replicate the 1967 hubcaps. They are not the legendary-Drake wheels Illustrated. They're 3K a set.

No, Corey, it is not.

If it was I would know all I would like to about those outrageously beautiful wheels!!

I remain very impressed with the wherewithal of whomever came up with that brilliant idea. I want one just for display since I don't have a '67 (yet!).

Corey meant Keith not Kieth...
It is my personal opinion he was referring to the fake / Mustang of the 'The Going Thing' and the identity theft of 67400F7A00171

So, if you are going to spend 3K on some custom wheels in the 17" size, could you not order them to look a lot more like a Magstar?

Hello Rod,

This is a 17" wheel that looks pretty darn close to a Magstar.  Certainly close enough for driving around with current high performance tires and sitting in the garage without having to worry so much about flat spotting repro Speedway 350 tires.

Thanks,
Eric

Hello Doug,

The wheel was made by Mike Stallings.  He used to own Wheel Vintiques.  He now owns Circle Racing wheels.  Last time I had any contact with him was in September of last year and he was in the middle of moving from Commiefornia to Texas.  Let me know if you want his phone number.

Thanks,
Eric

Those Calicommies!

Do you have a picture of it on the car? It's really nice.

I've seen the 16" ten spokes.

Hello Doug,

Unfortunately, I do not.  I do have some photos of the wheels on a '67 Shelby convertible tribute car.  I hope these help you.

Thanks,
Eric

I wish I could bring myself to like the look of the 17 inch rims and low profile tires on classic shelbys, but I do not.  I just think they look out of place and like the bigger meat tires. JMO.

The RESPEC 69 GT500 looked pretty nice with them, but still doesn't work for me.
