Title: Coil tag
Post by: shelby001 on September 19, 2021, 03:15:58 PM

Anyone know what the aluminum tag under the coil  tells us  for example 428- B - 7D  second line ,424-B    ?

It says either your tag (or entire engine) is not correct if you have a 1968 Shelby.

Shelbys used the "405 J04" or "405 J05" Engine code

The second line is a code for the motor and that code belongs to a 428 Super Cobra Jet engine.

Isn't "7D" the date code, which would be April '67??  That wouldn't be an SCJ date.

No it is not the date code

Yeah, date on second row.(Thanks Pete, had to dig some out!). Either there is possibly more letters/numbers on his tag or not a normal tag layout??

The "8 A", "8 B" are date codes.

In the discussion about 67 GT500's, in that case the number was 8 and thought to be
""8° initial advance" and D was the engine assembly plant, Detroit.

Why would the '68 tag be different?

Whats J04 & J05 mean

Because we are not discussing the paper tag on the head, but rather the aluminum engine ID tag. No timing information there.

One code is for the 4spd J04, the other J05 is for the automatic.

The code on the engine tag will simply be 405 J and does not distinguish between the two set ups

They have tags that corresponded to their specific engines and specific build dates.
