Title: Black flocking for 68 console
Post by: gt350bp on December 31, 2021, 08:26:04 PM
Bought a black flocking kit off of Amazon and tried it today on my 68KR console I'm refurbishing. It worked OK, but  I should have used a heavier coat of the paint adhesive on the sides. Instructions indicate 10 - 15-minute working time on the adhesive paint, but the 80-degree temperature today caused the paint to dry faster. Attached are photos of the instructions and my results. I used pinstriping tape to try to get straight lines on the finish, but I think i would alter the process slightly. Wish I had another insert, as I think I could get much better results after the first try. Hope this might help someone who is looking to refurbish their console insert.

Gary,

Attached is photo of the kit I bought on Amazon. It was about $16. I have enough paint and flocking to probably do 2 more console inserts. I definitely would change the technique I used. Be sure to use a very heavy coat of the paint adhesive, as I have some thin areas as the paint flashed of quicker than I anticipated.

I did a quick search on flocking on you tube. Appears to be several videos. Did you watch any before doing yours? I'm thinking of doing some 69-70 consoles. Gary

Yes, I watched some of the videos and they were helpful. The 80-degree weather in Florida at the time caused the adhesive paint to dry faster than anticipated. Should have used a bigger brush and worked faster! The 69/70 consoles would probably be a little easier to do as they are not as deep as the 68 Shelby console inserts.

Good luck!

Thank you. Also does the old flocking have to be removed before the new flocking is put on do you know? Gary

I might try flocking my original cracked console insert without removing the flocking to see what happens. Will advise.
