Post by: 68krrrr on February 28, 2022, 01:04:31 AM
Well i guess it's that time & Hollywood is bored or out of new idea's ,Steven Spielberg is remaking Bullitt so at least it's in good hands ,but should some things just be left alone ,i mean why mess with perfection.

As per the article -

To clarify, Deadline Hollywood reports that the new Bullitt movie won't be a remake of the original 1968 film. Instead, it will be an original story centered on Frank Bullitt, the main protagonist played by Steve McQueen.

Could be very cool with Damian Lewis - see "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood"

- Phillip

I wonder who they will cast and also about the writing.  McQueen cut out many of his lines and gave them to his fellow actors.  See the scenes where he and Don Gordon interact as cops.  Don has lots of lines.  McQueen wanted Bullitt to be the strong/silent type.   So to stick with that characterization, they need sparse dialog from Bullitt and then an actor who can pull it off with minimal words.
But then it's Hollyweird and they will do like Ford did and just use the name (Mustang....) and CGI the rest.

I hate to disappoint you guys but Bullitt II will be staring Mustang II.

This news is coming at a bad time. I was just looking at the 2019 Bullitt prices yesterday to see if I wanted to add one to the stable.

The movie sucked - it was long, boring, drawn-out and with the exception of the chases really was a loser of a flick.

IMHO

Here we go again with a classic film remake which never match the original. Remakes of McQueen's Thomas Crown Affair and Spielberg's current bomb, West Side Story come to mind.

As for utilizing an original story what shall it be? Bullitt involved in sex trafficking while reconnecting with his first divorced wife? Or will it involve revenge for his partner killed by a secret cabal of crooked cops? And how will he be "more" cool?

And the elephant in the theater (or streaming) is the car chase, a classic unequaled in over half a century. Is Spielberg thinking one with a few Dukes of Hazzard car jumps will be the way to go?

IMHO Spielberg doesn't have the cops and robbers story instinct like Michael Mann. Think Heat and Collateral.

PS: Per IMDB, Mann is in pre-production for the film Enzo Ferrari. Heaven help us if it turns out to be Ford v Ferrari with an Italian accent.

PPS: In the It's a Small World Afterall department, Mann was Ford v Ferrari executive producer

There were lots of great car chases filmed in the late 1960's and early 1970's.  The French Connection, Vanishing Point and a few others.  Look up Bill Hickman to see a common thread.

1974 Gone in 60 Seconds was the best.

Spolier alert  :

to appease todays audiences, a young lady who identifies as a male detective will be playing the lead role.....

Although not confirmed the title will also have a slight twist to it, the new film will be called

" The Bullitt "

I knew Eddie Eagan (the real Popeye Doyle). He told me most of the driving in the chase was done by NYPD cops and Hickman did the shots where the car was hitting stuff.

The last line in the article states:  "For now, details remain scarce around Spielberg's original take, with no script or casting attached just yet,".  Pumping it up NOW could be bad for the Movie.

We found the movie to be very engrossing and entertaining.  I had reservations about Damon as Shelby.  After watching the movie I felt he endeavored to accurately portray the man.  We watched the movie for about the 6th time last week.

Four nominations for Oscar, two actual wins.

The Bullitt and The Towering Inferno remakes, were considered since the mid/late 1980s. Heck, even a movie about Carroll Shelby was discussed in the early 1980s. I was hired to shoot some stuff for this upcoming Shelby movie project in 1992-93, with a running title "Striped Lightning". We shot some vintage races at Willow Springs, Sonoma, and Laguna Seca during this time. Long story short, Warner Bros pulled the funding and did not want the filmed 35mm negatives I shot. (still have them!). The proposed cast was actor James Best (sheriff Roscoe from Dukes of Hazzard) as Shelby. He was in my opinion, perfectly cast for Shelby. He looked like him, and talked like him. Anyways, as history shows, they cast Matt Damon (lousy!!) in the "Ford vs Ferrari" pos. It now appears Spielberg is bringing back the Bullitt character. Again, we interviewed Chad McQueen in 1989 about the potential remake as Bullitt's son for the film. That sure did not pan out! Word has it, Spielberg or Oliver Stone will direct the secret film project "In the Year 2525" for release on 2/25/2025. Keep ya posted!

I thought the version of the movie with Angelina Jolie was superior to the original. Spielberg is a great director- I can see him producing a good flick so I will give it a chance.

Royce,
What the heck are you talking about? The year 2000 remake of "Gone in Sixty Seconds" was directed by Dominic Sena, not Spielberg.

I liked the remake of Gone in 60 seconds. It's a completely different movie than the original. It stands on its own as a good movie. Not sure what you thought I meant. I suspect anything Spielburg makes would be different than the original Bullitt in the same way that I might like it but it may have nearly nothing in common with the original.

The 2000 gone in sixty seconds had a great cast. A good story line and great car chase scenes. Not to mention the creation of Eleanor. Which raised prices on 67-68 Mustang Fastbacks everywhere in any condition!

Sorry guys, I disagree with the remake of Gone in Sixty Seconds. The original was much better. Great cameos in it too. Hollywood's 'remake' was in my opinion way over the top, and badly casted.
