Title: SAAC - 6 Monterey / Laguna Seca
Post by: oldcanuck on February 28, 2022, 05:52:56 PM
While looking for something else in my 35mm archives.... I stumble across a brown envelope marked   AUGUST 1981 HISTORICS - SAAC 6

I'm no Dave Friedman, but a couple of these are pretty cool from back in the day.

Enjoy,

Bob

I was there making Hot laps in my 66. I had to look twice at the skinny kid in front of the lincoln- Thought I might have been famous for a brief moment! ;D Lots of fun- when people actually drove and raced their cars not keeping them stowed away in their car collections. My how things have changed.

great images, in the one shot of the rear of the dark blue Cobra with the plate "COBRA 7", looks like a Cheetah in the background.

Yes or as Jerry Titus called it the Gyro. You never knew which way it wanted to point.
I think this is the Monterey that Les Linley's MK IV went home in a basket. Somewhere I have a series of photos of the crash taken by COCOA's Les Zoller who was in the right place at the right time.
PS - don't worry it wasn't the LeMans winner. I also have photos of the car when Les first bought it and it didn't have the roof bubble.

Are you sure this is SAAC 6?  That would be 1981.  Mark VIIs came out in 84 and I think the first LSC was in 86.

Those photos are later than '81.  Probably close to '86.    I think it's the Monterey/Laguna Seca weekend, and not a SAAC event.

^^^ In Old Canuck's Reply #5 photo with the red GT40 in the foreground, you can see:

Tom McIntyre (blue shirt, green jug in hand, back to camera) standing next to his #47 Cobra.

Partially hidden behind the Cobra is McIntyre's Mickey Thompson Corvette (also #47) that would not have been at an SAAC event.

SAAC 6 was August 81 Just before the Historics. Tom would have taken both cars to run in the Historics. With so many Fords it could be one of the Monterey races where they honored Ford
1983 - 80 years
1997 - Shelby
2003 - 100 years
2012 - Cobra
2015 - GT350
2021 - Ford TransAm

Brett, I don't remember Tom's M/T Vette being track ready (at least not sorted enough for Laguna Seca) in 1981.

I'd suggest closer to 1983 for that milestone.

Yes.... red....... good eye.

Also is that the Mustang mid-engine prototype parked on the right of the #5 Daytona Coupe ?

I think that's either GT/108 or GT/109  ?

Mike

ps: I'm pretty sure it's GT/108, found a photo in the Ronnie Spain GT40 book (my copy pub. 1992) different angle, you can see the

whole car, that same motor home behind, and the nose of the Daytona Coupe, identified as being taken at the historic's at Laguna

in August 1983.

Mike

Still can't post photos  ::) that "uploader" issue.

In Aug 1981 weren't the Historics and SAAC-6 consecutive weekends..... and alot of the cars were there both weekends ?

I wish I could find the rest of my pictures..... I know I took more being out there both weekends.

Where's the pictures of all the car parts with prices so we can all drool over them?

The SOHC 5 window @ SAAC 1 in reply 3 was $6,500. It's sitting on a 427 Cobra Chassis and there were 10 more magnesium wheels in the truck that went with it.

I was only 11 years old at the time but I remember seeing the MK IV Gt40 after the accident. It was a mess!

I was there also. I worked at Owen's Illinois glass Co. for 36.5 years 2 exits down the freeway and lived about 4mi away. It seems like I remember Cobra from Texas with a SOHC motor in it but not sure. I remember drooling over some of the parts but was too poor to buy anything. I was at the Monterey SAAC convention where I traded an NOS magnesium SBF crossram intake for 58mm webers to Jim Inglese in exchange for 4 NOS worked over Italian Webers for my aluminum Mirage GT40 motor which I sold to Jay Cushman.

And I thought that I was the only one at that convention ??? I may have some picks ??? Remember watching 1967 Gt500 with 427 that was insanely fast on straight part of the track, I think it was Lime green in color ( not sure )

Yes big block Mustangs are kinda like early CanAm cars. Drag race on the straight then tiptoe around the corners.

1982?  If so, I was there with my KR...just bought it about three months earlier, and drove it up from L.A.

Maximum I could get out of a full tank on the highway was 90 miles. Did a cat-and-mouse type race with a Lambo on Highway 101 north of Paso Robles. He was very surprised I could keep up with him.

Great times! And a great SAAC event.

In these pix, I can identify Tom McIntyre's 427 Cobra (#47, in lower left of top photo) and J. Bittle's red/white stripes GT500 with a 427...in bottom photos.  Others?

1981 , I drove my KR to Dearborn in 1980 ( SAAC 5 ) I think I managed about 150 miles to a tank . There was a discussion about antenna placement on 67 / 68s earlier , note the red 67 with antenna on RF fender in the pix .

Lincoln tech, right you are...it was the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca in '82 that I drove my KR to.

I went to the '81 SAAC event, but was a passenger in my pal's '65 GT350.
