Perhaps it should be asked, "which was better, The Gumball Rally or the Cannonball Run" since The Gumball Rally came out first. The similarities between the films are endless. However, at the end of the day, for me its The Cannonball Run that went on to be a well known classic.
"The Gumball Rally" hit theaters in 1976 with an ensemble cast including Raul Julia and a very young Gary Busey in the yeller camaro. You pretty much know the plot even without knowing. A group of people race across the country, in this case New York to Los Angeles, and the car with the best time wins.
"The Cannonball Run" came out in 1981 and features a star-studded cast including Burt Reynolds, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Tara Buckman, and Adrienne Barbeau. The characters are in a coast to coast race, with who-knows-what on the line.
I pick the Cannoball Run, it was fresh and it was fun. I like it !
Gumball Rally for me. Had more the feel of the actual Cannonball race than The Cannonball Run which proved to be over the top in silly costumes and cheesy acting.
Why my choice of Gumball Rally
Best actor - Raul Julia as Franco Bertollini in the Ferrari
Honorable mention - Lapchick the mad Hungarian motorcyclist
And "Miss Golden Shifter" Linda Vaughn (because it's Linda)
Best car- the 427 Cobra
Best scene - when Franco pulls out a gun and squirts water at Bannon " now you are marked for life"
Best line - Franco "And now my friend, the first-a rule of Italian driving — what's a behind me is not important!"
Linda, Linda, Linda
The yeller camaro
The "killing scene" has got to be one of the funniest ever
The other movie has some honorable mentions....
And of course these two
No preference
Gumball Rally - used real Cobras of Duane Bower and Les Lindley. Stunt driver got canned when he drove the Ferrari into the front of the trailer at 35mph during the scene where it pulls into the semi. Some of the stunt driving was John Morton who had driven for Shelby and later in Brock's Datsuns. He did a lot of stunt work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEWFsjruKbA
Cannonball Run Brock Yates & Hal Needham actually ran it in the ambulance then made the movie.
Of course I wouldn't be me if I didn't point out the dark side of the Cannonball Run movie. Didn't Heidi von Belz become paralyzed as the result of a stunt accident during the making of that film?

Yes - Probably one of the dumbest accidents in moviedom. No reason it should have occurred when you look at the stunt talent on that movie - Hal Needham and Burt Reynolds both started out as stuntmen. She was also the girlfriend of Bobby Bass who was the stunt coordinator on the film. But I guess the almighty budget kicked in and they "had" to get the shot.

Bad decisions, poor decisions, hurried decision, could have been avoided. But those Benjamin's !
Has anyone mentioned Linda and her academy award winning performance yet ?

They used Linda because Jungle Pam lost the coin toss. I hated it when NHRA said long sleeves and long pants on the starting line.

E. P. A. = Linda
Sorry for the crappy picture I am not a "biologist" or a "photographer" "I am Tony, my pronouns are he and him, and I am a guy sitting at the table wearing a blue shirt and khaki shorts"
Did he say Khakis ? Maybe he sells insurance like "Jake "

Yep, thats it! Years ago I did some film shoots with Linda. She is a wonderful, fun, very down to earth woman with a wicked sense of humor. Anyways, we talked about Gumball and I mentioned 'EPA'. She loved it! She laughed and then she told me some inside jokes about the film....sorry, can't say it here...this is a family car site. lol
my vote for gumball
Gumball and Alternate Plan B.
