Title: Engine tag data
Post by: DRGT350 on July 30, 2018, 03:30:23 PM
Can someone help with an engine tag data?  I tried to order a tag for my car from Marti - but since the 66 Shelby's don't have the door tag....  so I need to tell them the information on the tag  -The car was built in SJ in April of '66, SFM 6s2052 is the Shelby number...?  Appreciate in advance any help on this -

Dave

all you need to supply him is the date of the parts build  so get the machined date off the front of the block,  he will need to know if its a 4 speed or automatic

Not sure that you realize but wanted to mention that your car would not have typically had an aluminum ID tag attached to the intake manifold when new.  They did have the engine ID sticker/decal though

It would be very rare to find the aluminum tag on a " '66" engine. There was no place to put the tag. Some early cars did have them under a manifold bolt. but they were dropped quickly as too much trouble.

Ive also seen early cars (65s)  with the 554  tag under the water temp sender

Dave

Since the OP was asking about a pretty late car that is correct. There have been a few carry over cars (especially the black intake cars) that had the tags swapped from the cast iron intake to the new one at Ford during the change over, found. Its clear to see that that/those employees got it wrong and the process corrected so from that point forward no more painted aluminum intakes and no swapping the engine ID tag over

That procedure was carried on through the carry over production.  6S240 ( and others) had the tag there. In '66 the temp sender size was increased making it impossible to put the tag there.

I'm just noticing this thread and wanted to ask if the 246 engine ID sticker was typically only applied to Shelby's or are these also found on non Shelby K codes?

+1 Nothing to do with SAI. All Ford engines had the paper tag. six cylinder to SOHC in '66.

Jeff's picture is from a '66 HiPo with an automatic transmission. The paper tag reads 246S.

The 4 speed equipped '66 HiPo used the tag with 245S.
