Title: Leave it to GM
Post by: KR500 on February 15, 2019, 08:39:57 AM
Did anyone else see the Cadillac commercial featuring two Fords? Cadillac traveling down a city street, women waving purple flags, Caddy turns left. There on the corner is a Brittney blue 67 F/B Mustang and a yellow Crown Vic cab. Apparently they don't check their commercials.

It don't think it was a mistake... marketing people most likely felt that by showing the Mustang and Crown Vic (iconic cars to some) will translate into believing the Cadillac is iconic as well.  This is just my opinion and years of dealing with marketing types.

If you go with the "Iconic" thing why wouldn't they use a Camaro, Corvette, Impala, at least something GM?

I have no idea why GM did not use one or more of their own cars - it is not unusual for companies to use competition in ads.  I am just saying that I don't believe that the cars were there by accident and unseen by the GM marketing and ad people.

Didn't Cadillac move its headquarters to New York City?

Notice that the majority of ads are in a NYC environment, so maybe they wanted to feature their cars in a "real world"  urban street setting.

Haven't seen that ad, but I've been to NYC dozens of times and never saw any vintage cars there, let alone a '67 Mustang.  Not exactly what you want to drive in that horrendous traffic.

I agree that there's no way the GM marketing people didn't see the Mustang in their ad.  Every pixel in an ad is scrutinized/colorized/modified before it's aired.

But, as for their mindset of why to include it, instead of a vintage Camaro/Corvette, I have no idea.  (Unless someone in authority is a Ford lover!)

And, yes, Cadillac moved its HQ to NYC.

slightly off-topic I guess... but Cadillac is moving back to MI. The NYC idea was sh!t-canned along with the guy who was in charge at the time  ::) ???

That was quick.  All part of the GM clusterf**k of brand identity.

Van believe it or not when I lived in NYC in early 90's there was a Boss 351 parked kinda beat looking right in the Washington Square NYU area.
Saw it dozens of times.
Not to mention driving in my 70 Convertible at least once...

Same idea in this ad for the Ford Edge, I think it's a Nissan, Porsche, and a Ferrari with the giant teddy bear on the back. There are variations on this ad with different vehicles.

I was only there once and saw a 64 1/2 Mustang at the Ford Pavilion of the Worlds Fair.
